I can't open any folders! Help!

ok I don't know why this happened or how this happened but now when I open any folders in windows 98 (my only os), the error message

"This program has performed an illegal operation adn will be shut down" Explorer

Under Details it says:

"and when I click close, it tells me that an error has occurred with internet explorer and will now close" and I click 'ok' .

I dont' know when this problem popped up. How can I fix this? Please reply asap!
