Question

Disabling laptop touch pad

Asked by: Sparky191

I want to temporarily my laptops touch pad when I'm using a USB mouse. Is there an easy way of doing this like like a taskbar shortcut to an app, rather than having to do it through the control panel each time?

Greetings, Sparky191!
If you can put your touch pad settings to system tray, then you can access your touch pad from there.  If not, there is no way to create a shortcut from Control Panel to Desktop.

Best wishes, war1

How do I do that? I only see settings for my USB mouse. I wonder has the logitech software overwritten the Sony touch pad software.

"..... has the logitech software overwritten..."
Probably!

What type of touchpad is used? (E.g. Alps or Synaptics)

At least the synaptics drivers have options for how the touchpad should react when other pointing device is present.

Why do you need to disable the touchpad, btw?

Haven't a clue. I'll load up the driver CD that came with the lappy and see whats on there. I want to disable it because as I'm typing I keep moving the cursor by accident with the touchpad which then puts my text somewhere other than I intended it to go. Usually mid paragraph.

OK, I see. The "Tap = Click" horror again. Urgh.
As far as I'm concerned, Logitech mouse drivers are infamous for messing up a lot of things - why not the proper touchpad drivers... Those would normally allow you to disable the Tap=Click thing. I suggest you uninstall the Logitech drivers and use the mouse as a generic USB mouse. Should work OK in most modern operating systems... and it may let the touchpad drivers stay loaded.

Are you sure you don't have a button to disable the touchpad; I do on my HP Omnibook.

by: Sparky191Posted on 2004-01-04 at 16:16:28ID: 10039192

The only thing about the logitech drivers is that they allow me to assign actions to the wheel "click" and the thumb button. On my desktop I usually assign those functions and then uninstall the logitech drivers. I might try this with the laptop. I have noticed that the laptop touch pad drivers/control pad has been deleted by the logitech install. So I'll try adding it back.

No its a Sony Vaio. There doesn't seem to be any hardware or software with the machine to do it. I haven't found any software or drivers that have a simple way in turning on/off the touchpad.

by: Scott_BurnsidePosted on 2004-02-12 at 03:52:53ID: 10341512

Very simplistic answer, but the following works for the Sony PCG-F8xx and PCG-F4xx series laptops.
Start; Programs; Sony Notebook Setup; Touchpad; has enable/disable buttons
You also have the option of placing the Sony Notebook Setup icon on the Taskbar.
If this application is not installed it will be on the Apps CD that came with the notebook.

Still can't do it. Anyone else any ideas?

by: asmodeusnzPosted on 2004-03-01 at 18:12:17ID: 10491759

Don't believe you can do it other than through the control panel way that you are already doing

What model Vaio?

Don't have it in front of me at the moment but I think its a GRT968HP

by: Scott_BurnsidePosted on 2004-03-02 at 10:02:27ID: 10497311

Yes. The GRT models do have a different Sony Notebook Setup from the older Fxxx range. It's a pity they changed that aspect of it.
I would suggest you try disconnecting the external mouse ( or mice - yes it is possible) and looking back into the setup's pointer device tabs to see if the touchpad settings reappear.

by: Sparky191Posted on 2004-03-02 at 15:10:27ID: 10500178

Thats an interesting idea. I'll try that. I'm doing it less the more I use the laptop, but I have to remember not let my thumbs stray!

by: Sparky191Posted on 2004-03-25 at 15:08:46ID: 10682692

I have awarded Scott_Burnside points as he says it can't be done and it seems the most likely answer

by: Scott_BurnsidePosted on 2004-03-26 at 02:04:36ID: 10685615

My new GRT996 has arrived, and yes there is a way, although not too elegant.  The secret is Easy Launcher.

Setup
Start>Programs>Sony Notebook Setup>Sony Notebook Setup
Device Tab. You will see a tick box beside the pointing device. This will disable the touchpad.
Now click on the Pointing Device Icon to select it and click the Settings button
Take the Miscellaneous Tab and switch on the Tray Icon for the touchpad
Click the Easy Launcher Settings. Click New.
Navigate to the Sony Notebook Setup program. It will be under Documents & Settings>AllUsers>StartMenu>Programs>Sony Notebook Setup Select it and Open
This will put it in the list of shortcuts.  Click OK until you exit.
Now the touchpad icon will have appeared in the system tray.

Use
Right click the touchpad icon & select Easy Launcher
Click the Device Tab and unclick the Pointing Device to disable the Touchpad

Hopefully this was worth waiting for!!

by: Sparky191Posted on 2004-03-26 at 16:26:52ID: 10692462

I don't seem to have a misc tab and I don't have Easy Launcher settings. But the other steps do disable the touchpad. I'll try that for a while and see how I get one. I use the laptop with a USB mouse 95% of the time anyway. I'll see how get. Yes it was definately worth waiting for. Cheers!

I might see if theres a later version of that Sony Notebook setup I can download.

Cheers. I'll down load them at work tomorrow. Did you register yours online then? I was thinking of getting the extended warranty. How about you?

by: Scott_BurnsidePosted on 2004-03-29 at 23:57:17ID: 10711493

Yes and no, respectively.
I use & maintain around 8 of these little beasties and the only problems I have had over the last 4 years consist of dead battery packs and failed hard drives. Both problems simply corrected and probably not worth the extended warranty.  The disk drives were only reported as failed with the SMART reporting and after cloning them to new drives so that the on-the-road users don't get the warning message, I have used the old drives in USB cases as removable storage (£14 + VAT per case from my local supplier). The decision is however yours and pertaining to your capabilities with a screwdriver and recovery CDs.

Thanks that interesting. I've repared laptops before so I'm not worried about that. I was more concerned about the screen going. which is a big dollar value.

by: Scott_BurnsidePosted on 2004-03-31 at 07:27:56ID: 10724388

I can only say as I find.  The Sony build quality appears excellent.  I have never had a screen failure and with over 7000 burn hours on each machine, the quality is still extremely good with negligable fade.  I would suggest however that prior to any repairs you invest in a fine Phillips screwdriver.  I did when changing the disk drives and it made life so simple.

This was for a SonyVAIO.
How to turn off the keypad/touchpad on the notebook
You need to run a program called C:\Program Files\Sony\Setting Utility Series\VCCPointingDevice.exe
You can create a shortcut to this file (go to the file and right click and say create shortcut and move the shortcut to the desktop) ,  but of course, if the mouse isnt connected and the keypad is turned off you cant get to it so you can also create a hotkey connection to the file.  Right click the shortcut on the desktop and select properties.  Here you can create sort, I used Ctrl+Alt+T

Then when the mouse is not attached you can use the hotkey to open the touchpad control and use the Alt-E to toggle the Enable box.
I have attached a file that includes some screen shots.

Er this discussion is like 5 yrs old.

by: phmurphyPosted on 2009-06-08 at 07:48:15ID: 24572652

And er, it really didn't give a complete answer like I was looking for today, so when I figured it out I added to the information.

Does that explain it well enough?

by: Sparky191Posted on 2009-06-08 at 17:54:36ID: 24577503

by: phmurphyPosted on 2009-06-08 at 18:00:47ID: 24577533

I found that item as well, but it didn't really explain how to create a hot key to the shortcut which is essential if you have turned the keypad off and now no longer have a mouse to get to it.
