Cannot Access Hotmail from new Windows XP Computer

I cannot access Hotmail from a brand new HP Pavilion a420n. The preinstalled software is Windows XP and IE6.0sp1. I get to the login page (https://loginnet.passport.com/ppsecure/etc) fine, but when I enter my account name and password I get finally a timeout error (cannot find page) while it's looking for http://www.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/etc.
I get this same failure from all user accounts on this machine. I can log into this hotmail account from the only other computer on my home LAN and from my computer at work. I can log into MSN.com from the problem machine, using the same .net passport account I use to sign into Hotmail. Trying to access the Hotmail account from logged in to MSN.com also times out. I get exactly the same behavior when using Mozilla Firefox 0.9.

I have searched this problem on experts-exchange and tried all the solutions I've found with no joy. (checked hosts files, erased cookies and history and turned on all cookies, turned on all SSL and TLS, checked time and date, reinstalled .NET 1.1, etc.).

Sorry to be so long, but I wanted to save you the time of proposing solutions I've tried already.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
