Download TweakUI from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx if you are using winXP, for earlier versions look somewhere else for TweakUI. That config app has such a function.

With multiple 'Back' selection, it does not seem that (cleared) History is all that useful.  Given that, it may be as effective to set Tools/Internet Options/General - History - Days to keep pages in history: 0.  It may be worth testing to see that it does not store anything from a previous run of IE on the same day.

by: AmarjitSinghPosted on 2004-07-06 at 07:44:48ID: 11481613

Tried it previously - inconclusive.

I'll try Tweak UI, but, unfortunately, FarzadA, your solution only erases Temporary Internet Files, not the History.

iISystem Wiper, a freeware app,  will clear any or all Temporary Internet files, History, Typed URLs, Temp files, Cookies and cookie index file in IE and AOL. It will also remove Temp files, Recent documents, Find File history, Find computer history, Run history and Empty the recycle bin. It will also remove the Search history from most file sharing apps and clear the "Recent" documents from MS Office, and will, happily do any or all of these things upon shutdown.
Clearing temp files upon shutdown aborts most viral and trojan exploits as they like to hide in temp files while waiting for the machine to be restarted, at which time they are able to advance their agenda. They will often have been terminated before your AV program even becomes aware of them. It's a good practice.

My recomendation is NEVER use third party apps for any task that can be done by hand. the more apps you have the more crap that can go wrong! Not are programmers are created equally, some are down right fools and can end up destorying your pc. So do it by hand of do a registy hack to do it. BUT no 3rd party apps.

by: wjalPosted on 2004-07-06 at 12:10:24ID: 11484577

iISystem Wiper is not some pice of code that I found five minutes ago in a frantic search at WebAttack. I have been using it for almost a year now without any problems. I am able to do all of these things manually, so it is obvious to me that they are being done correctly. The advantage is that it is far faster and far more convenient.

You can write a simple batch file that runs at scheduled intervals, or that sits on your desktop - which simply deletes the folders where your history, cookies, and temp files are stored.  These folders  are replaced by windows automatically, so you won't have to worry about that.

Buried in the (hidden) directory \History.IE5 is the index.dat file. Unless the software purges that file you don't get your history deleted. Anyone know why MS wants to keep that so well hidden?

If you need help writing the batch file, or running it on a schedule, I can assist you with that as well.

by: AmarjitSinghPosted on 2004-07-07 at 08:02:05ID: 11492504

Yes, it would be reassuring to receive some assistance in writing this Batch file.

I would like for the Batch file to erase the contents of the History folder (index.dat inclusive, if possible) and to be scheduled upon the exit of Internet Explorer.

Many thanks,

AmarjitSingh,

You could try Crazy Browser, it erases all the history when you close and it uses Internet Explorer engine, so its fast to open and has basicly the same options. You also have some interesting features such as popup blocker and tabbed navigation.

My advice : give it a try!

Download Crazy Browser

IE is just bad use mozilla firefox. and right a batch delete all the catch from mozilla. There might even be a plugin for mozilla firefox

by: AmarjitSinghPosted on 2004-07-15 at 07:54:51ID: 11559650

Crazy Browser, upon initial inspection, seems great, but slightly bloated, for my intention, in deleting the history. In addition, I couldn't find the option in TweakUI - any help?

As I did - upon an earlier recommendation. However, I was incapable of having the option, for the history to be cleared, located. Might you be able to provide advise for this?

by: mollyketchupPosted on 2004-07-19 at 09:46:09ID: 11585041

The standard way to clear Internet Explorer's history of types URLs is to use Internet Options / General Tab / Clear History /

You can also use a TypedURLs.reg file:

1. Copy and paste the following to a TypedURLs.reg file:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs]

2. Run Regedit /s <Folder_Path>\TypedURLs.reg

Those actions, mollyketchup, will not clear out the index.dat file(s) AFAIK. MS seems to value them highly, for some unfathomable reason. They do have a lot of web browsing info in them and other stuff that might be something user does not want to leave lying aorund.

Hi Amarjit

You might want to try the solution from this post

or try this link
http://www.mrbass.org/privacy/

"INDEX.DAT and HISTORY on Windows 2000 and XP
Internet Explorer 6 makes it pretty much impossible to delete history just like index.dat because when your logged into an account they are "in use". Only way to combat that is to logout and login to another account that has administrator privliges to wipe out history, index.dat, etc. files.

Download privacy-cmd.zip or copy and paste and create your own.
You still must right click on privacy.cmd | Edit | Change YOURUSERNAME

Creating a new user account with Administrator privileges.
Right click on My Computer | Manage | Local Users and Groups | Users
Right click white space on right pane and choose New User | choose a Password | Create | Close
Double-click account you just created | Member Of | Add | Choose Administrators | Add

rem Windows 2000/XP delete cookies, history, index.dat, TIF, temp files
rem Name it privacy.cmd and put in
rem C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
rem to clean index.dat files login under ANOTHER administrative account
rem Do NOT forget to change YOURUSERNAME
@echo on
c:
cd \
rd /s/q winnt\temp
md winnt\temp
cd docume~1\YOURUSERNAME
rd /s/q locals~1\tempor~1
