Question

How to make a caricature picture from a photo ?

Asked by: AshuraKnight

I'm looking for a software which could transform any photos into a caricature picture / cartoon looks picture.
Something like what Wired Magazine used to transform their contributors picture.
Like this here : http://www.wired.com/wired/ --> at  Bruce Sterling blog section (almost top right)

by: AshuraKnightPosted on 2004-08-24 at 03:48:39ID: 11879756

Hmm i just realize that with dimpleart you actually need to send your photo and they will make a caricature from it.

Ashura,
I don't think there is a program that can do this for you as true caricature is an artists perception of how to redesign the facial features, and is normally drawn by hand. There are several plugins for Photoshop that allow you to morph ther photo and by using something like that you might be able to get a caricature typ effect from your photo.

God bless!

Sam

Do you know specific photoshop plugins which can do so?
I'm looking for plugins which can morph the photo into caricature or manga (japanese comic book) like.

You should ask the moderator to move this question to the Photoshop section as the guys there will be able to help you the best with stuff like this.

You could try a program like Paint Ship Pro 7 or 8 and use some of the image transformations.

If you play with the tolerance and opacity fields, you might be able to get the effect you desire.

For a purely grpahical point of view the process would likely involve redicing the contrast to acertain extent, followed by a color merge and possible brightness alteration.

Basically you'll still have to do a good load of work manually...I'll give it a go at home and get back to you on this...

Use Photoshop color reduction (reduce colors to 32 or 16 without dithering).

What you need is a vector based drawing program- like Macromedia's Freehand, Adobe's Illustrator, Corel Draw, or even Macromedia Flash.

Flash has a great option to "convert to shapes," which i'm pretty sure freehand also has.  You put in the picture you want to "caractureize," use the convert to shapes function, and just adjust how many colors/how big of shapes/ how sensative you want the color depth and you're almost done.  It takes a little bit of tweeking, but the Flash version is very much for beginners, and i strongly suggest it.

Good Luck!

Guys, could you please give me some sample picture which could be done with your suggestion?
This way, I could know which way to go.
Thanks

Did you see my links? they already show you the before and after...and judging from the picture you provided...its exactly what you are looking for

by: AshuraKnightPosted on 2004-08-30 at 06:45:27ID: 11930929

Yep I did.
But it's not the same with what I'm looking for.
See, from the picture I provided, there's a detailed face line like chin etc
and it's looks much better than the tutorial've done.

here's another example: http://users.tpg.com.au/adslai82/sapatebak.gif
and http://users.tpg.com.au/adslai82/sapatebak2.gif

I know now that it's been done with Adobe Illustrator with Vector related technique.
But I still need to figure it out how to make something similar like that :)

Thanks

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear before.
It's not caricatur picture but it's more like japanese comic picture :)

by: AshuraKnightPosted on 2004-08-30 at 07:31:34ID: 11931390

That's nice. But could you get me the tutorial to do the same thing for a person :)
Something like this : http://www.kannadesign.com/tutorial/00-1hair2/hair_2.htm but in english :P

And I wonder whether it's exist or not for a plug ins / macro to do this job ?

by: AshuraKnightPosted on 2004-08-30 at 08:49:24ID: 11932293

This girl is really rock ! http://www.kannadesign.com/home.php?id=3
:)

And btw DVation, the link you gave me is based on photoshop.
Although it can do vector based editing but Illustrator much much more powerful than Photoshop.
Because photoshop mainly is for raster based and Illustrator / flash etc is for vector based :)
