Hello nickg5 =)

well there can be many possibilities..... but before troubleshooting the problem, will you please like to tell that when did this start..... i mean is it a recent happening or is a common problem with your broadband connection? :)

sometimes my cable modem is slower than dialup. I have had cable mdoem for about 3 months. It is very fast when downloading programs, but when it comes to websites and going page to page it can be bad. Last night I was listing items on Ebay, off and on at the top I noticed "program not responding" but then it would go off and the page proceed to change.
Is my spyweeper or AVG preventing popups and spyware? and while they attempt to load and the AVG and spysweeper react and destroy, is there a delay?
So far I am not impressed with cable modem except when downloading programs. But, the problem associated with the question has bascially been noticeable the last couple days. I did have a webpage open just now that uses Java.
Ebay tells me they do not use spyware.
I can start a spysweeper scan every day and always find 15-20 of them. It is an endless chore, day after day.
Do I need T3 just to get cable modem speed?
I once asked my cable modem company, how many users per modem. They would not answer other than you have your own modem in your home. But, my modem connects to something at their place and at that point I wanted to know how many users.
My old dialup ISP only had 6 users per modem.

Use " Cablenut " tweaking software. It's the best ever and also free. You can get cablenut settings from tweakxp website too. It's excellent. You can also download " the tweaking experience " free registry guide which is one of the best of its kind but not complete. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProvider has some priority values which can be twaked by changing them to 1. Four priority settings changed to data " 1 ". You can also delete both the subkeys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace

Deleting these subkeys will stop IE from searching for printers and shared folders each time it connects to the internet speeding up the browsing time. It will save you couple of seconds eachtime you visit a webpage. Also use Opera 8 beta which is by far the best internet browser. There are more than 5 good web browsers but Opera has it all. You name it and Opera has it. Firefox is an excellent browser too but Opera is resouce friendly and has many options which don't come with firefox by default. If you want more options in firefox you need to download firefox extentons which can be had from the firefox website.

Some websites need IE. Apart fromIE based sites you can use Opera and or firefox to browse the internet. Both are good but Opera comes with ads or no ads-registration where as firefox is completely free. But the ads in opera don't take any noticable bandwidth. The bw usage for ads is something like negligble and also it does take some space.

First make sure your DNS is working OK and your settings are right.  If you are using SpySweeper 2.x, that is probably your problem.  I had the same thing on multiple machines.  3.0 fixed the problem, but it got so bad on the previous version that I had to turn it off on the wife's computer.  The 3.0 took care of everyting.

very interesting article on why IE seems to be slow.  The main reason it appears that IE is slow, is that more and more servers are using Linux Apache to serve their web pages, and IE uses a non-standard way (to non-Microsoft Servers anyway) in requesting pages.  The end result is that IE will continue to get slower as time goes by, because Linux is winning the Server wars.  The solution then would be to start using a Open Standards browser.  No amount of fiddling with IE will make it behave in a standard browser fashion.

samcarty: I am using 3.0 spysweeper. How do I check DNS? (do not even know what it is)

way12go: your first paragraph is all greek to me. I do not understand it at all. As far as Opera, what happens to all the things I want to keep that are associated with my IE, such as Outlook Express and all my e-mails, all the folders and files on my computer, and what things or actions that I do now will I loose. Also, MSN messenger and auto alert Hotmail.

Go to the Properties of your network places and then the properties of your network card.  Look at the TCP/IP properties and look at the DNS settings.  It is either set by your Internet provider or is statically input.  If set by DHCP, then your provider is giving you them and they should be correct.  If statically set, and even if not, it won't hurt to check with your ISP to make sure the proper entries are in there.  I had problems before with AT&T messing with the DNS

Change IE ans install Opera or FireFox

I don't think you need to go to FireFox as a first step to solve the problem, because it's unclear yet what your problem is.

Your first step should be to see if the problem is on your PC, or if it's on your wire.

1) You could very well have too many people sharing your cable connection.  Cable modems are a shared connection, similar to a hub or the old telephone party lines.  While you DO have exclusive use of the modem, you don't have exclusive use of the cable, and are sharing your bandwidth with your neighborhood.  DSL, on the other hand, provides an exclusive connection to your ISP's local wiring office, so typically provides better speed.  Do you notice the problem being worse at different hours of the day?  It may have started crawling last week just because all the schoolkids are now at home and running P2P software 24x7 and sucking up all your bandwidth.

Close out all other explorer windows, then go to this site and test your bandwidth speed: http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Here's what my speedtest shows:

Your download speed : 1245742 bps, or 1216 kbps.
Your upload speed : 321728 bps, or 314 kbps.

If your broadband connection tests fast, then it's probably a problem with Explorer, spyware, or both.

2) If your broadband is slow, as samccarthy says above, check your cable modem settings with your ISP.

2a) If your settings are right, and your broadband connection STILL tests slow, then you might consider changing providers, going with DSL, or bitching load and long to your cable provider.  Or, shift your Internet activity to a time period with low use in your neighborhood (e.g. 9am).

3) Do you have Windows XP SP2?  You should consider downloading it.  Go to http://windowsupdates.microsoft.com
4) Note that Webroot's SpySweeper doesn't catch everything (in fact, none do).  In testing shown here http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm , SpySweeper caught, on average, 55% of the tested spyware/adware packages.  You should read the links on the test page, and definitely run HiJackThis! found here: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Note that HiJackThis! will show all programs that load at boot, IE load, and all the toolbars and doo-dads you've installed, including all the helpful ones.  Delete with caution, because you might delete something useful.

5)  If your bandwidth is still high, but your browser is sluggish, then try running CWShredder, also available from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html to see if you have CoolWebSearch.  Run CWShredder -> HiJackThis! -> AdAware -> repeat until clean.

6)  Try to uninstall as many applications as you can.  Having 120 applications loaded will drag your system to a halt.

7)  Cleanup temp files, empty your cache, delete your cookies, and Defrag your system to improve performance.

8)  Once you've tried everything else, and if it's still slow, you have two options:  Mozilla's Firefox, or reload your PC.

Best of luck!

You stated that sometimes when the webpage hangs, it states in the title bar "Program Not Responding".... You have some currupted files I believe. If your computer has only been doing this for several days, use XP's built in "System Restore" utility and roll the system back to a week or so ago, before this problem began to manifest.

Or, try using the System File Check utility. Do that by clicking on your start menu, click on 'run', type in "CMD" and hit enter. In the black window that pops up, type "SFC /ScanNow" and hit enter.

by: nickg5Posted on 2004-12-29 at 13:37:37ID: 12922237

mugman21:
I did the SFC scan now. It took over 30 minutes, at one point asked for my XP disc, completed checking files and then nothing but a place to type in something in the black box. I thought it would say files are ok and in their proper place. Maybe they are since it did/said nothing.

I have done system restore before, by turning it off, reboot, and then turn it back on.
How do I go back a week or so. I have basically had these problems off and on since I got cable modem.

I'll do the band width check that 1cissp suggested and look into Opera.
can I have both IE and opera on my system at the same time to see the difference?

1cissp: I have the #2 service pack. I remember after I first got it I wanted to remove it, but couldn't. It created more problems.

by: frajicoPosted on 2004-12-29 at 13:43:22ID: 12922283

Yes, of course, you can have Opera, Firefox, MyIE2 and IE installed and working all at the same time.

1cissp:
my download was 971 kbps, upload 243 kbps. I am not sure it these are fast or slow.
as far as my IP and DNS it is set to obtain them automatically.

by: samccarthyPosted on 2004-12-29 at 18:28:47ID: 12923617

For cable that might be a tadd slow, but it is perfectly acceptable.

by: nickg5Posted on 2004-12-29 at 19:03:50ID: 12923718

I now have the CWshredder and Opera Beta 8.
give me a few days to frequent the sites where slowness is the norm.

Is there any chance you can borrow a mates computer?
If so have that computer use your internet and you know if the problem resides on your own computer.
If on his/her computer everything is still slow give your ISP a call.

If on his/her computer pages load fast.... well I'd probabely format my computer and start over from scratch because there could be soooo many things causing slow internet that you'd prolly be done quicker that way.
Ow and after doing a fresh install it might be a good idea to create an image of your computer.
Use norton Ghost or Driveimange for instance. That way you can always put that image back if something goes all wrong again.

Maybe you just have a ton of stuff on your hard drive and need to burn stuff off of your hard drive and defrag your hard drive because you said it downloads stuff fine it was just when you go from page to page. Then try the other suggestions, personally I partition my hard drive and save my stuff on any partition except for the C: Drive partition and then if something goes wrong I can just install XP or what ever operating system you have and be back online after installing drivers for your LAN card, motherboard, etc. Partition Magic 8.0 is what I use. I also know there are IE fixes out there that you can get to fix certain things with regards to internet explorer but a format and reinstall works really good.

by: nickg5Posted on 2004-12-30 at 17:24:41ID: 12930117

It is a long story but I have Windows XP and Windows 98 on my laptop. to get rid of the XP setup I was told to do the partition thing. People tried to explain it and it was so hard to understad, I was afraid I'd mess something up.

My hard drive, the last time i checked is not close to being full. I will do a defrag though, and try to find a tutorial in plain english on the partition thing.

Do local programs run smoothly on your puter?
And not like notepad but I mean some "heavier" applications.
If not the prob could easily be you having to much crap on the puter (pardon the language). If they run smoothly it'll be something to do with internet.

I'd really have a peak if it's just your puter or anyones puter with your connection. Maybe you are looking for a prob which does not reside on your end. And if it isn't on your end you can at least blame someone else (always makes ya feel better). The ISP might be the culprit.

Anyways good luck and happy new year

do'h that good, my idea of whats wrong out the question sorry

Disable the " qos " service using services.msc in the runbox or enable it in the group policy and assign a " zero = 0 " bandwidth allocation to it. Type gpedit.msc in the run box to do so. You may reove others except TCP/IP.

by: nickg5Posted on 2004-12-31 at 14:19:20ID: 12934147

way12go:
I am not seeing any group policy.
and putting gpedit.msc in start and then run box, did not work message saying Windows could not find the file.

what are the implications of removing the others? also changing bandwidth to 0

I tried services.msc in the run box and it said something about it was there to provides functionality for QoS aware programs and control applets whatever all that is.

Maybe after you partition your hard drive you can re format and re install your operating system and then install only the relevant stuff like the drivers for the hard ware you have from your network card to your graphics card and then re try it. If it is still the same then the only question I have is what speed is your upload and download supposed to be on your cable modem, The reason I ask this is because I had cable once and I went for the 256k download speed and it was slower then dial up to go from page to page and we upgraded to the 1mb line and it was fine after that. Dont know how or why that worked but it did.

by: nickg5Posted on 2005-01-01 at 05:54:24ID: 12935680

I'll check into the 1mb line at my cable company.

well, I have tried Opera for some days. On Ebay it is slightly quicker, but still at times, I can click the back arrow or a link and it seems like it takes 5 seconds or more for it to react and go to the next page. Similar when opening Microsoft Word it takes close to 10 seconds before it opens. And Opera, when I click on the icon it takes at least 10 seconds to open the browser.
