Question

What to do with all my email....

Asked by: dignified

Alright, basically, I use 3 different computers. I used to use Windows 10% fo the time and Linux 90% of the time. Few days ago I got a powerbook and now I want to use it most of the time since I can xhost to use some of the linux programs I like to use for programming. I currently work for the university I just graduated from. We get about 40 megs for an inbox. But just last month I got about 5000 junk mails.

On every platform I use thunderbird. I think it does a great job at spam filtering. It is annoying that so far I have been retraining thunderbird on each OS to detect spam. My best rules are set in Linux and I have been using windows and mac so far to only download email but not delete it off the server. In linux I actually download and delete it off the server and this is where I keep a record of everything.

I am looking to see what other people have done to get around this. I could use imap but I'm stuck with what to do about spam and I only get 40MB or so of storage. I want to have my thunderbird filtering files mirrored across all three computers at the very least.

I'm sure lots of people deal with this, but jsut wondering how they handle their email.

Use Gmail 1gig storage, spam filtering server side, pop access.

One possibility would be to get a new email address with a different provider such as Spymac, Rediffmail, or Gmail whom provide 1 gb of space.

I know that switching your email address isn't the best idea, but keep in mind, after you leave the university, your university email account will most likely be deleted.  So it might be wise to switch to an account you can use for the rest of your life, regardless of where you work.

If you are running linux, just fire up sendmail, and have your university account automatically forward to an address on your linux system. Voila; an inbox that is only limited by the size of your hard drive :)

clarification:

you would also need to use some kind of pop3 or imap client. I have kind of got in the habbit of using the term "sendmail" to refer to the whole MTA/POP3/IMAP package

i would really like to have all 3 computers show the same email when I open tbird. I have never messed with imap but it does this sort of thing doesn't it?

IMAP allows you to essentially view E-Mails directly on the server. If you just want to be able to view mail on all 3 systems, you can use pop3, and tell 2 systems to leave a copy on the server (similar to what you are doing now) but in this situation, I would think IMAP would be ideal. If you log in to IMAP on one system, it will show you all of the E-Mails on the server (at least for that E-Mail address) you can then delete as many or as few as you like. IE: You can log in from system 1, and delete the spam. Then when you log in from system 2, the E-Mails you left alone are still there, but the spam is gone. (beats the heck out of dealing with each spam E-Mail 3 times :) )

I'm not sure what distro of linux you are running, and what packages were installed with it, but personally, I'm using Fedora Core 3, which allowed me to install imap with the OS. Then, you just put the machine's IP into your E-Mail client, select IMAP, enter a username/pass and away you go!  One confusing thing at first, for me at least, was deleting in IMAP. When you click "delete" is does not actually delete the message, but marks it for deletion(shows the message with a res strike-through in outlook express). You then have to select "purge" to actually delete all of the marked messages.

Side note: If you end up running your own mail server, be sure to check out Qmail It's a royal pain in the rear to setup (I wouldn't reccomend it for someone who's just starting out) but once you get it running it's absolutely great. Check out http://www.lifewithqmail.org for more info

Move the rules to an external USB device, thumbdrive or harddrive whatever, then the rules should be able to be read and updated from whichever OS you are in.  If you use the same mail client on all three platforms you can probably even store your mail on the USB device.
