SQL select statement: HOW TO USE THE IF CLAUSE

i have below a select statement.

-------------------------
SELECT DISTINCT FA.ASSET_ID,FA.SERIAL_NUMBER
,MSI.SEGMENT1,MSI.DESCRIPTION
FROM FA.FA_ADDITIONS_B FA, MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_B MSI  
WHERE MSI.SEGMENT1 <> FA.SERIAL_NUMBER
AND FA.SERIAL_NUMBER = '49622'
--------------------------

now, what i want, is that when the MSI.SEGMENT1 <> FA.SERIAL_NUMBER then make the value of the MSI.SEGMENT1 to NULL.

how do i do that, please assists me on how to write the IF statement for this.

also if the case is  MSI.SEGMENT1 = FA.SERIAL_NUMBER then make the value of the MSI.SEGMENT1 same with the value of the FA.SERIAL_NUMBER.

please advise.

Try this...

         MSI.DESCRIPTION

         MTL_SYSTEM_ITEMS_B MSI

You cannot change a value in a select statement, you must use update to do that.
update mtl_system_items_b msi
set segment1 = null
where not exists
(select 1
 from fa_additions fa
 where msi.segment1 = fa.serial_number);

i thought he just meant "make the value a null" as in show a null value next to the information that has no match, as opposed to actually change his data.  But who knows!
