Help with French

Does any of you in here read/write/speak French (I mean Paris French). I'm currently in French 2 and we're supposed to write a brief paragraph about our childhood.

I'm already stuck on the second sentence. How would I say "Back then" ?

So far, I have:

Quand je rappel mon enfance, je suis très nostalgique.


I was going to say: "Back then, I thought that life was hard, but it's nothing compared to life now," but I need to know "Back then".

Altavista gave me dos alors, but I'm a bit skeptical because I'm almost positive I remember that alors means so...

Any help I receive is appreciated. Thanks!
