Question

How to delete the "Downloader.Trojan" virus ?

Asked by: cross-ways

My Norton Antivirus 2005 (Internet Security 2005) has detected the following virus (which it cannot repair or delete) :

Loadadv458.exe
Downloader.Trojan

The location of the infected file is:

C:\ProgramFIles\Common Files \ Wise Installation Wizard\WISCDEBF9E7BCEB43A7986CE66377C28ABC_1_0_0.MSI

This is what I have tried so far ( which has NOT resolved the problem) :

1) Tried to delete it from the quarantine list - from the "Backup items" - but it still shows up again.

2) Scanned with “TrojanHunter”, which detected and removed the virus. However....when I did a new scan with Norton, it reported that the virus was still there (that I am still infected). I then ran the TrojanHunter scan again...which then indicated that I had NO infections or threats…but according to Norton, I still have.

3) I scanned with "Trend Micro House Scan" , which removed a lot of things (but nothing looking like the Downloader.Trojan virus. (while doing this scan, a  Norton "announcement" suddenly showed up explaining that Norton had detected and deleted a virus named "Downloader.Trojan" ...and DELETED it ! , but it still showed up in the next Norton scan I did.

4) I scanned with “Spybot – Search & Destroy 1.4”, which didn’t help.

5) I followed the suggestion in the Symantec link: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/downloader.trojan.html.... and did a Norton scan in Safe Mode + looked for anything suspicious in HKEY_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run
HKEY_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/runonce
HKEY_current_user/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/run HKEY_current_user/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/runonce
…..but nothing changed.

6) I tried out the Hijack Spyware Tools ( HijackThis 1.99.1)...but I am afraid that tool is too complicated for me.

7) I scanned with “ScanSpyware v.38”…which detected many things, but they require that you purchase it if you want to use its cleaning tool (...and I have no credit card).

8) I scanned with the “Ewido Security Suite” software, which detected and deleted a number of spyware threats, but did NOT detect the virus I have – not in the full scan, and not when I went to the windows file that is infected, highlighted it, right clicked it and choose “Scan with ewido” (doing the same with Norton, the virus is detected

What else can I do…that is not difficult for an amateur like me ?

Grateful for any suggestions?

Hans

Ps. I am running on a Windows XP Home

Try this:

(0) Boot in safe mode.

(1) Right click on the file (C:\ProgramFIles\Common Files \ Wise Installation Wizard\WISCDEBF9E7BCEB43A7986CE66377C28ABC_1_0_0.MSI) in Windows Explorer or My Computer, select Properties

(2) Click on the Security tab.

(3) Click on the Advanced button.

(4) Uncheck the box labeled "Inherit from Parent...", then click "Remove"

(5) Repeat steps (1) to (4) for the other file (Loadadv458.exe)

(5) Close all windows.

(6) Reboot.

After reboot the file(s) will be unable to run (because no one can access them any more). The symptoms will be gone.

Post back if you have any question.

Unfortunately, that solution does not solve the problem at hand...just because you can't access the file does not mean the system can't.

Try this instead:

1) Download, install and update Ewido (skip if you have this done already)

2) Reboot into Safe mode.

3) Scan with Ewido.

4) Navigate to here: C:\ProgramFIles\Common Files \ Wise Installation Wizard\WISCDEBF9E7BCEB43A7986CE66377C28ABC_1_0_0.MSI

5) Delete that file along with Loadadv458.exe if it is still around.

6) Run Disk Cleaner and clean up all your Temp, Temp Internet Files, History, Cookies.

7) Reboot the computer.

8) Scan with Norton once more to check that Norton is coming up clean.

"just because you can't access the file does not mean the system can't."

Not true. If you remove all permissions from the file, the system cannot access it any more. The key here is "all" permissions.

I'm not going to answer your question about Norton, 'couse I just dont like it...
I will ask only one question:
Why don't you use other antivirus solutions... I'm using Kaspersky, and I just love it

Make sure you disable system restore, then run scan again.

Also Run ewido a couple of times with system restore off, sometimes it takes a couple scans  to eliminate the trojan.

Resuming from previous thread.

First try what war1 suggested, and r-k repeated here.
Though I am afraid it's another file that riggers them, hence creating duplicates.

As for the processes:
press ctrl+alt+del
when task manager opens, click on the process tab, and check for suspected processes, as that might be the cause you can't delete the file.

As per hijack use, it's not as hard as it looks.

Lauch hijackthis, click on "scan"
a long list will appear, on the bottom left click on save log
a notepad document with that long list will open
select all
copy
go here
http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english
paste in the box, and click analyze
wait few seconds (depends on your internet connection)
see the results, and suggestions
read the notes to understand the marking

DO NOT POST the log here, if you really have doubts post only the entries you are not sure about.

Just a note about Norton's corporate companion, Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition 9. SAV 9 has continued to find some adware on my C:/ drive even though the adware has been removed. I know the stuff has been removed because I removed it. And my machine is running fine.

What's going on is that I'm running Win98SE, which has the famous problem of disk defragment never completing -- especially on the c:/ drive. So SAV 9 is spotting something that has been erased but that hasn't been overwritten. When I tell it to delete, it can't do it. I check my processes with process explorer, etc.

That may be your situation, Cross. I'd go read what the downloader trojan does and watch to see if anything like that happens on your machine. If yes, then you're infected. If no, then a false positive. But give it enough time to be sure.

I had one of those things. This got rid of it:

Start->Run->sysdm.cpl <enter>
From the System Restore tab, Turn it off - by checking it.
Reboot and then deselect it to have it reenabled (it 'can' come in handy sometimes, but can also be a hiding place for trojans).
This should take care of it - (the trojan has embedded itself in one of your restore points - this will kill all restore points, thus the trojan horse as well).
You will lose all previous restore points, as you've noticed -but you wouldn't want to restore this trojan either, so that's irrelevant...
