Portable MP3 recorder/player?

I've been using a minidisc for a few years, mostly as a player, either in my pocket through earbuds or in the car with a cassette-converter thing. I can record onto the disc via line-in or optical input as well as a mic socket.
The md's other purpose is live recording using a tiny stereo microphone about the size of a pen top. I get perfectly adequate sound quality this way.
What I can't do however due to misguided security constraints, is transfer the recorded files to a pc (ultimately to a cd), without playing the tracks in real-time with all the associated sound loss as I am playing through connectors and pc sound card etc.

So. I've decided to move with the times and get myself an mp3 player, but what I can't find out is if any exist that I can just plug a microphone into and record a fairly decent sound - I don't mean like a 30 second voice memo, I want to record music for possibly 4 or 5 hours (and I want an optional timestamp every 5, 10 or 15 minutes) at fair quality - the minidisc quality at LP4 is good enough.
I want to be able to use the device as a portable player so it needs a good battery life from a recharge and must be small and light.
It should have a usb connection and the ability to drag and drop files from the pc to the unit and vice-versa.

Does one of these mp3 units exist? and does anyone have experience of them?
