Allbull,

The latitude.exe sounds very promising, and my phoenix bios is on the list. A just need to generate a boot to dos cd on a my NTFS system.
I read that one shouldn't pull the battery for dell inspiron laptops or was it laptops in general... in ethier case, they didn't offer any explanation, but were very clear on this instruction.
Thanks for the help!
Where did you read that you shouldn't pull the CMOS battery? I've used that trick in PC's for a decade or more now. If you're CMOS battery died, would there be "damage" (SW or HW) to the laptop? Finding it in the laptop is likely the trickiest part. the list of Dell manuals for your laptop is here:

But nothing there has an internal schematic.
Here's a decent thread over at techspot that covers most Dell BIOS password questions.
http://www.techspot.com/vb
The thread mentions 3 different types of passwords that may be set on your laptop: the Power-On Password, the Supervisor/bios Password, and the Hard Drive Password, all of which require different, and sometimes complicated, procedures. If the problem is the power on password, then your best bet is pulling the CMOS battery.

You will have to take it to a Dell repair shop to get it reset. Normal tricks don't work as far as I know.
