Question

any uses for an OLD cable box?

Asked by: brunobear

I have a really old cable box (you know - before tv's were cable ready).  I actually used it on an old tv up until about 4 years ago but has now just been sitting in my basement.

Any uses for this old thing or is it time for the junk heap?

You could give it back to the cable company considering that cable subscribers only rent the box from the cable company. Alternatively, you could just junk it..or see if anyone you know needs one.

Maybe take it apart and learn something.

Donate it to the nearest, most appropriate museum OR start up your own technology museum.

I used to get regular requests from Art College students for motherboards.  Presumably they made collages from them.

unless you have some interest in electrical engeneering  and want the circutary or led lights, I dont think its a good idea to chuck it in the dump as with any electrical goods they can carry contanimates and should be disposed of properly.
I like the idea of returning it either to the cable distributors or some electrical store the university is a good one too with students always looking for old electrical goods to create a new toy.
here is one silly example whether it works or not?
Use your old Cable Box to control your lights!

If it is still in good working order you can offer it over ebay or yahoo or simply set it up to a spare tv in the spare bedroom.

Take it to a recycling center. This old box contains a large amount of lead, and maybe other toxic substances that may harm the environment. The materials contained in the device may be used to manufacture new stuff. I believe some recycling centers pay you for your electronic junk.
