The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Windows Vista Ultimate & Xbox 360 Video Error
Tags: 360, xbox, video, vista, error
I recently upgraded my Media Player computer to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition. When I attempt to play MPEG2 video clips through my Xbox 360 I get the following error:

Video Error
Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer.

I restarted the machine, and my Xbox 360 and the problem still persists. Prior to upgrading from MCE 2005 I had no problem playing MPEG2 videos. What the heck is going on here?

I checked out the support videos files here, and MPEG2 is one of them.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/extenderfaq.mspx

I know that the system will play WMV files, but that would mean I would have to convert everything to that particular format.

Any suggestions are welcome..... Jeremy

Are the MPEG files you are trying to play compressed via DIVX? If so, they will not play on the 360... this is Microsoft covering their butt's from the MPAA and the torrenting of movies. MPEG files that are not compressed with DIVX will play on the 360 just fine. On a side note, if you buy the HD-DVD player for the sytem the firmware update for the 360 allows you to view just above every video format other then DIVX on the 360... I can even stream .MOV (Quicktime) files to my 360 now from my computer. The 360 could easily support the DIVX codec but again, Microsoft is appeasing the movie studios by not supporting it... especially since Xbox Live now offers digital move downloads.

I believe all the files I have are MPEG2 that use divx. So is there any way to convert them with the same quality? Also what program are you using to stream video from your PC?

Thanks

Coverting from DIVX back to another file format can be tricky and you will probably get mixed results. However, I have come across some software that converts a DIVX'd MPEG into a file that will copy over to a Microsoft Zune, so it may be worth a shot (http://www.cucusoft.com/ipod-movie-video-converter.asp)... although it may format it smaller for an iPod/Zune screen. Some of their other products may be able to do what you are looking for. I've been looking for ages for a good MPEG to WMV/AVI converter and just can't locate one that is reliable... most end up making the 600MB file 5GBs or more.

Once thing I did to make playing of my "movie backups" easier was simply to buy a cheap DIVX compatible DVD player such as this Magnavox one from Wal-Mart:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4810681

With the DVD player I simply burn the DIVX file to 1 CD or put multiple "movie backups" on one DVD, they playback great.

Thanks for you input it is greatly appreciated. I have been playing around with MPEG to WMV converters as well but the quality sucks on the ones I have tried. I am giving you all the points. But tonight I am converting back to Windows Media Center 2005, cause I have so many Music Videos, and TV Eposides that I want to stream through my Xbox 360.

I am deeply disappointed in Vista's Media Center. Do they expect everyone to convert the standard they specificed in previous editions.... What a joke.....

Thanks man....
