The camera is a Kodak EasyShare (6200?) & came with software. It has some built-in memory, but I've also added a card. My OS is XP.

Browse All TopicsI have a 3-year camera which will no longer transfer pictures to my computer. I've tried plugging it in different usb ports, but no luck. However, my usb flash memory works fine, so it seems that it's not the port. Thinking it may be the camera, I used someone else's camera this weekend, downloaded the appropriate software to my computer, & tried to transfer with their camera & their cord, but still no luck. Any ideas?

Hi TinaSC
respectful apologies for maybe asking a silly question, but some cameras require you to set the jogdial to a certain position to 'activate' connectivity options. Have you set the dial to the correct position?
I am certain you have as it seem to work before but thought I mention it as no one else has. You seem to be in good hands here reading through the comments.
Hope it goes well
I had a similar situation when the camera "reset" itself to default values. It became clear, after much hair-tearing, that it also "defaulted" to a different transfer method (or protocol) than it was set to use with my computer... You could browse the camera's options to see if there are anything that can be changed in respect to transfer protocol or similar.

I have two Kodak digital cameras, and they cannot be accessed except through the EasyShare software when it has been installed. The USB ports, the Scanner & Camera Wizard, and every other resource stays blind to them 'til you run the software.
I didn't like this, so I dumped the software, and now one of them just shows up as a drive when connected, and the other requires the services of the Scanner & Camera Wizard.
This is how I dumped the software when I found a simple uninstall was inadequate to the task of getting my camera connected (this is from Kodak's FAQ on Easyshare software):
"Q: Now that I have upgraded to EasyShare software version 5.0, my connected device is no longer displayed as a drive letter in the My Computer window or in Windows Explorer. What is wrong, and how can I fix it?
"Answer: Answer last updated: 02-08-06
"There is nothing wrong. In EasyShare software version 5.0, you no longer have access to the device in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Instead, you use the Sync and Transfer Manager (Tools > Sync and Transfer Manager) to manage and configure the devices you use with EasyShare software.
"If you want to see the device as a drive letter in the My Computer window or in Windows Explorer, you must use Kodak camera connection software as stand-alone software. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the EasyShare software icon.
2. Select Shut Down EasyShare software.
3. Uninstall EasyShare software:
1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs. For Windows XP operating systems, select Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs.
2. Select Remove (or select Change, and then select Remove).
3. Follow the on-screen prompts to remove the software.
4. Install EasyShare software, and select a Custom Install to install only the camera connection software."
Good luck.
Lots of helpful suggestions, this is great. I'll close this question out soon, but want to respond to a couple things first....
- I downloaded the current EasyShare software from the web & now it's recognizing my camera. BUT --> I don't understand why it wouldn't see the brand new one I borrowed and it's not showing in Cameras & Scanners.
- I also downloaded the Msoft tool that lherrou suggested. That didn't seem to help either (but good to know it's there).
- No install of RealPlayer, but I have installed WMP10 -- can't remember if I did that before the camera issues??
- captainreiss - by the jogdial, do you mean switching to the on position to activate it? if so, yes, i have done that, but another good point
- maybe i could try tterk's suggestion on the new camera i borrowed & uninstall that software?
Well, it's great that the camera is now recognized. WMP 10 and RealPlayer both change some associations and registry settings which are known to cause problems with "Cameras and Scanners" and the tool from MS is supposed to help with that, but it only works on the associations, not with other registry changes. It's one of those things you can tinker with for a long time...

TinaSC,
Can you tell us a little more? Camera brand and model? Does it have built-in memory, or a storage card? Operating System?
It sounds like, if your USB port is working, it might be something with Microsoft Windows' built-in camera & scanner software (assuming you are using Windows). A lot of camera software rides over the top of that, and so if that is not working, the software will not work either.
Cheers,
LHerrou
