my port 80 is blocked

Hi,
I have a HP media center that I got in 2003 and am running Windows XP.  I suddenly couldn't access the internet last week so I called Charter and after their troubleshooting they said my port 80 was blocked and that I needed to call HP and tell them that.  They want $50 to talk to me since my warrenty is up.  I am at a friend's computer so please be detailed in anything I need to do since I will have to print it out and take it home.
Thanks!

if you're using xp or 2k, go to Network Connections > Properties (for the NIC) > Advanced > Options > TCP/IP Filtering > Properties. See if the filtering option is checked, and what ports are listed.

It is also possibly caused by a form of malware.  If you have it I would run a scan with spybot and adaware to see if you have any of these problems.  (You can download both from download.com)
Sounds like a very dubious answer and a brush off to me.  Check this:

1 - open a command prompt and type "ping www.google.co.uk" - Does it return an IP and a reply
2 - Check Windows firewall and any other firewalls aren't set to block it

Hp woouldn't be much help

I don't think I'm running a firewall.  I'm using Avast as my antivirus.  Charter did do "ping" and something else - I can't think of it right now and it wouldn't ping.
II need to know if the ping resolved to an IP address or not.  This will help determine the problem

Thanks RDAdams - I'll try that!

Ok modell, I'll try ping again.  Thanks!
A sudden block of port 80 seems a bit improbable. Far-fetched, actually...

You will need to check your entire setup:
1. Is your modem up and running; all lights OK etc?
2. Is your router up and running (if you have one)?
Check the light that corresponds to the connector your computer is connected to; is it on? Does it flash at all?
3. Can you access your router (or your modem) on its config page (most have one)?
4. Does your computer get an IP address and what is it?
5. Have you tried powering off all involved units and powering them back on?
6. Is there wireless connection involved here as well? If so, verify that the wireless unit in the computer isn't accidentally turned off.

Hey rid
I went through the entire troubleshooting thing with charter.  They checked the modem (no router) and unplugged it/reset it, pulled up a command prompt and did ping and one other thing that told them my port 80 was blocked.
I also did ping again using the address modell gave me and it didn't work.
I did run a scan using Avast and it found 3 trojan viruses.  I'm at my Mom's house now and am going to download the other things you guys suggested and run them - she didn't have any blank discs the other day.  Wish me luck!  Thanks everyone!                              Misty
