how to kill a hard drive?

(I tried to post this in hardware > storage > hard drive but it said storage is a zone and questions can not be posted there)

My old computer contains alot of personal info, account numbers, social security numbers, on and on. The info could not be transferred because the hard drive was locked up.

I'd like to discard the computer and remove the hard drive and destroy it.
Can it be opened as I see small screws?
Where is the info stored?
Would a few beatings of a hammer make it unable to be used by identity thieves?
What about at the bottom of a river?
Would the water ruin it?
