asked on

ok you electronic and mechanism design people I need help.

Here is what I have and what I want to build.

I want to get conclusive evidence if my anti dog barking device works. The range is 25 feet and the dogs in their cage are actually about 28 feet. Before cold weather I would put it in the open window inside the screen. It was a few feet too far away. Between the house and the cage is nothing but air. I can not mount my unit closer to the cage without it being easily detected and stolen or vandalized.

A garage door opener used rollers, you press the button and it goes up and stops. You press the button and it goes down and stops.

I want to utilize this type mechanism to use my barking device.
I have a wooden 6 foot fence 2 feet from the dog cage. The bottom of the fence has a 8 foot 2x4 running horizontal to the ground. I'd like to mount the device and have a metal channel with rollers. After dark, when the device can not be detected, I'll use the remote to move the device to the right maybe 2 feet until it extends just outside the end of my fence. It will be then pointed directly at the center of the dog cage only 5 feet from the dogs
In the morning, use the remote so it moves back to the left and behind my fence to conceal it. I have extra fence sections and can lean one against the fence to further conceal the device.

Can someone help me design such a left to right, and right to left, mechanism that lets me use a remote and not have to go outside two times a day to alter the location of the device. I really see no other way to get it closer to the dogs. I could park my truck by the house and let the device hang from the tail pipe. I would rather not put my truck in a place where it could be vandalized.

Bracket, channel, rollers, two-three feet long, remote control, horizontal mechanism like a garage door opener.
Maybe simple for you pros to help me design. Cost seems minimal.

Thanks.

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to mount a small cheap microphone on your fence and bury a length of bell wire to connect it to equipment inside your house?
It would save having to conceal it every morning. If it needs protection from rain or dust then a small plastic bag would probably be enough. Just a thought, your roller arrangement sounds quite complex.

Microphone?
How to use it?
Do you mean the mic pics up dog bark and transmit it to the anti dog barking device in my house?
I can not leave the windows open due to freezing weather. There is no place to mount the device and have it clear of obstructions and also not detectable easily. (see photo)
Many people claim these devices do not work. More than one transmission of sound might be non conclusive, not sure.

The device has a plastic cover so they claim it is water proof.

By leaning one of my extra fence sections against the existing fence this would help shield the device from detection and weather. With serious chances of rain or snow I could go out and remove the device.

Between house and dog cage is nothing but air. There is no place to discreetly mount the device so it can not be seen, stolen or damaged.

It needs to be no more than 5 feet off the ground, and no obstruction between device and source of noise per it's instructions.

The roller mechanism would hide the device, and get it to within 5 feet of the dogs. Before cold weather hit, all I could do was put it in the open window, inside the screen, but it was not close enough. The range on the device is 25 feet and the dogs were 28 feet away.

As you can see in the photo a sliding mechanism behind the fence on the lower horizontal 2x4 would be ideal to see if the device works.

The bedroom window is on the other side of the tree. There is a gas meter near the tree and the device could be mounted there but it would be way over it's 25 foot range. As it is now, the window to the cage is 25 feet and the dogs are about 4 feet further out.

Missed the point, sorry Nick. I thought this was to do with the noise meter in your other Q. I see now that you need this device to be near enough to work. I have a mental image of something like you are describing, just trying to work out where I have seen it. It wasn't a garage door. Something that slid on extending rollers like a desk drawer, but when closed a flap lowered and covered it. Might be furniture, I shall go and rack my brain.

The noise meter was what the judge said was needed. Only the county police have one, and the judge might only accept their meter. It can not be used unless a sherrif wants to loan me one. I doubt that.

Before going to court over noise or calling the cops until they issue a $250 citation, I want to try the device I have now, for anti dog barking.
If it fails, I'll try their $100 model.

So this thread is to get my current device closer to the dogs.
There can not be any obstructions between the barking and device, and no more than 5 feet off the ground.

A simple drawer from an old dresser or desk, and the roller and channel would give me a place to mount the thing on my fence. But, it would be non mechanical. I could go out every night and pull it out manually.

The microphone might work for this device to get the dogs barking to the device.
Dog barks near the microphone > microphone transmits frequency to the device > device returns an ultrasound to the dogs that humans can not hear. I'm not sure if the device would work with a microphone transmitted noise.

The device comes with a 50 foot cord and AC adapter and has a plastic cover and it water proof. So, looking for a small scale "horizontal" garage door opener mechanism maybe 3 feet long at most, to be mounted on the lower horizontal 2x4 on the fence. This would get the 25 foot range device within 10 feet of the barking and then be conclusive on whether it works or not. The manufacturer says it won't work on all dogs. I don't know so far, have no place to mount it close enough to the dogs.

If I had a junk $100 car or a $50 junk wooden hauling trailer, I could park it beside my house and hang the device underneath on the exhaust pipe, etc.
Don't want to put my car or truck over there and be subject to vandalism.
A guy at Home Depot said maybe the remote and guts from a remote control car could move the device, right to left after dark, and back to the left, out of site in the morning, via remote control.

>have no place to mount it close enough to the dogs.
How about a 'decorative' pile of logs, just what you need in the cold winter months.

It sounds like you don't want to be doing anything too permanent or expensive while you are still trying to find out if the device works.

A little more expensive, you could try making yourself a nice brick built barbeque, just in the right place.
You wouldn't need to make it permanent so no mortar required, you could say you are just trying it out if asked. A couple of slabs on the ground and three sides of bricks up to a slab ash-base and more bricks above to support the iron work that 'you are still looking out for'. The slab acts as a weather shield for your equipment, leave gaps between the bricks so the device can 'see' the animals.

Good possibilities.

The guy at Home Depot said they have "swinging gate openers"
My father's garage door was remote control. Press the button and it went up and stopped. Press it again and down and stopped.

>>> I need left to right and right to left, instead of up and down.

I might mount the device inside a junk dresser drawer on roller and channel and pull it out manually for a few days to see if the device is working.
Before cold weather I had it in the open window. There were times when the dogs started to bark but it tailed off to a whimper. It was inconclusive at best.

I can try a hidden micropone to the device with wire from microphone in 1/2 inch plastic pipe covered by leaves. The microphone "might" get more dog barking frequency to the device. But, the device must be postitioned so it can send the sound back to the dogs. That must be clear of any obstructions.

There was mention of using a microphone to pick up the dogs bark. That sound could not be plugged into the device. Without this ability, then I would have to hear the noise transmitted into my house by the microphone.
A microphone to a tape player with date and stamps could record the barking.

I'd like to avoid court and avoid them getting a $250 fine. Get this device much closer to the dogs, and keep it in low profile so it is not detected easily. If it does not work, then try the more expensive model. If that fails then consider other options.

here was an idea someone had for reeling the device out at night, and reeling it back in. The old clothes line mechanism. (able to be made mechanical on a timer?)

Alot of things have happened. The dog owners got a $330 fine for barking dogs and we go to court on Feb. 11th.

They signed over the two dogs in the cage to Animal Control, two days after the citation was issued.

The eventually moved the 3rd barking dog, from my end of their house, to their end of their house, and a few days later, that dog's house was gone.

Now, the 4th dog, the older mother dog, has not been seen in 4 days and may have died.

So, all projects are delayed pending the court ruling, and how long this cage stays empty, whether the brown dog is only being kept temporarily by it's real owner, and whether the 4th dog has died and will or will not be replaced.

thanks
Sounds like a result, I hope you can enjoy a good night's sleep now.
Ditto.
