The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How do I connect my laptop to the internet using wireless?

Tags: my, laptop, internet, how, connect
I just purchased a laptop...i'm familiar on how to connect it using a cable to the internet, however, I don't know how to connect it using wireless...

I want to bring my laptop w/ me anywhere I go with internet connection.

What do I need?
Do I need a wireless router? and if do will I have to connect it at home? I'm already using a linksys router at home...does this mean I might have to change it to wireless? or is there anyway on connecting a wireless router and just a normal router?

Do I need an ethernet wireless card for my laptop?

How does it work? How will I get an internet connection if I'm not around my house?

Sorry too many questions...I hope you take the time to answer me.

>>I want to bring my laptop w/ me anywhere I go with internet connection<<
You need a cell phone, a connection kit for the cell phone, and a dialup account.
Wireless usually has about a 300 foot radius.

>>What do I need<<
A wireless base station (has an antenna)
each computer needs a wireless card (has an antenna)

>>or is there anyway on connecting a wireless router and just a normal router<<
No need for two routers. If you bought a wireless router you'd replace the cabled router.

>>Do I need an ethernet wireless card for my laptop<<
Yes.

>>How does it work<<
Radio signals antenna to antenna.

>>How will I get an internet connection if I'm not around my house<<
If your in the driveway yes, if you go beyond about 300 feet no.

It is for portable use around the house without the wire, not much more than the com to entertainment center from a remote. So you can use it from the sofa while watching TV, not while on vacation on the road.

I just purchased a laptop...i'm familiar on how to connect it using a cable to the internet, however, I don't know how to connect it using wireless...

>>I want to bring my laptop w/ me anywhere I go with internet >>connection.

wirless Router range ranges from 100-300 ft based on how expensive router you buy.

>>What do I need?
>>Do I need a wireless router? and if do will I have to connect it at >>home? I'm already using a linksys router at home...does this >>mean I might have to change it to wireless? or is there anyway >>on connecting a wireless router and just a normal router?

you need a wirless router (go to your local electroincs or computer store and you will see plenty of choices) which acts as Wirless Access point. for your laptop you will need a wirless pcmci card which goes into the pcmci card slot.  For better recption you can event buy wirless signal booster which increase range siginificately and will be good enough to go into any corner of the house (i have one , which works inot my three stroy townhouse from top floor, my router is in basement) and also allows me to access net from out side the house.

Do I need an ethernet wireless card for my laptop?
>> yes  PCMCI wirless card adapter.

How does it work? How will I get an internet connection if I'm not around my house?

See above.if you want to access you own internet connection wirless.  For all ohter palce you may need a blue thooth enabled laptop,(Blue tooth is a wirless networking protocol) . Mosy of the cafes like B&N, star bucks and malls are providing blue tooth wirless access using laptop , however , you have to regiter with specific wirless services at a given place.

Sorry too many questions...I hope you take the time to answer me.

Also note than using wirless network in house which has a cordless phone of 2.4ghz, cuases distruption in the network acces , when phone is in use.

I had this problem , and it tokk me few months to realize why my network connection was getting terminated abruptely.

Sounds like you want cellular access. If you have a cell phone, talk to your provider about data options. You can often connect the phone to the computer using connection kits, or you can buy a cellular radio card to install in the computer. For example:

but...
it's slow and expensive.

if u are already connected to the internet in ure house you may be able to purchase a wireless access point that sits on a pc at home and then simply transmits the signal through the confines of ure home. purchasing a wireless network card on the laptop should be able to identify any possible wireless connections within the immediate area, you can then access that from all over ure house upon confirmaion of the network passwords and connections u may.maynot have set up

Most hotels nowadays offer a cabled ethernet connection or sometimes even a wireless connection for when you are traveling.  You can call ahead to find out what the hotels offer.

You will not be able to get to the internet over wireless however unless you are connected to a cellular phone solution as mentioned above.  This type of solution is still growing as it is somewhat slow and impractical as of yet.

----------------
What you will need:
To use wireless at home you will need a wireless access point.  Depending on your level of knowledge and configuration you may want to see if you can just simply switch the current router for a wireless router.  You can order a wireless router (pretty good one) for under 80 dollars online these days.  The wireless router will usually come with 4 ethernet ports in the back of it so that you can still connect your computer using the ethernet cable should you choose to.

You will need a wireless pcmcia card OR a wireless usb adapater.  In either case you will need to install some software for either one you choose in order to make windows work with it properly.  The wireless pcmcia card will be a really thin creditcard sized card that slides into your pcmcia slot on the side of your laptop.  It will have a built in antenna on the end of it that will usually look like a discolored extension of the car and will stick out a little further then you are used to.  It will also have a little link light on it to let you know when it can detect a wireless connection.  The usb wireless adapter is going to be a little bigger and it will have an antenna sticking up out of it (a normal looking antenna).  It will have a usb wire coming out of it that you will need to plug into your usb port on the laptop.  I have had more success with signal strength using the usb adapter as it has a larger antenna and can be somewhat moved/placed in different areas slightly away from your laptop.  Remember you only need the wireless pcmcia card OR the wireless usb adapter, not both.

That is all you should need equipment wise.  The configurations are generally pretty straight forward and do not require any special changes unless you run into difficulty connecting using the default settings.  This would enable you to connect your laptop wherever a wireless network is available (like the others said typically within 100 - 200 feet depending on the surroundings/material in walls/interference from 2.4ghz phones).
--------------------

How it works:
Your computer sends information to your wireless card or adapter which translates it into wireless signals that radiate outward at 2.4ghz using the 802.11b (11mbps) or 802.11g (up to 54mbps!) (dont get 802.11a as it is not compatible with g) protocol.  The signal is relatively weak so it cannot pierce alot of walls and heavy materials... but it does go through new houses pretty easily and drywall etc  (expect similar performance to a walky phone, except static on the phone would be a good analogy for degraded performance of the internet for the wireless NIC).  The signal is picked up by the wireless router or access point (almost interchangeable terms for small home/office equipment) which then converts it back to the format needed to send it over the wires to your cable modem or dsl modem then out to the internet.
----------------------

If you are not at home around your wireless router (which stays at home btw), you will need to locate either a "hotspot" (alot of starbucks cafes offer wireless connections in their stores.  They use the same wireless routers you would at home connected ususally to a cable or dsl service), a hotel with wireless ability, or even some airports are going wireless as well.  Pretty soon it will be a standard for common business man areas to offer wireless solutions to help enable a truly "mobile" business world.

If you wish to go the cellphone route, it looks like there is some great info already posted!
