I use Flashget and it's definatly the best!
It even uses a clipboard function for multiple links and you can customize enough to personalize it!

Don't forget, you can also tweak you OS or your browser for optimal performance.

I appreciate DTA (Down Them All) which is an extension for Mozilla. It uses multiple connections at the same time and can continue after loss of internet connection. Free and easy.

If you are provider for larger files to be downloaded, then zip them first.

Use Download Accelerator

These tools can only help if first of all you have a fast internet connection that isn't running at it's limits, and if the source from where you are downloading the file from is hosted on multiple servers. If that is the case, the download manager will look for other servers and download the file from multiple sources at the same time. A problem with this is that while the download is running your internet will be slow for other activities and it uses more resources on the PC.

Generally I haven't experienced too many advantages here am therefore not using any download accelerators.

I have used Download Accelerator before. But it doesn't offer the advantages of FlashGet :)

I am adding my two bits to the above which covers basically about everything on downloading. Most important things are
1.the Router OR Modem OR Cable speed you are using
2. the Capability of the site server from which you are downloading at the time of downloading.
With these two at the highest level, the download managers cannot help much more for you to invest in buying a download manager software. However, when the site is capable of supporting multiple links and have multiple mirror sites AND YOUR MODEM IS NOT LIMITING, then these accelerators will help when the single servers are limiting in speed. So you can conclude that you can get help in about 10% of your downloads, the accelerators may be useful.
