The importance of Religion

I have been raised as a catholic, I do not practice the religion at all and have serious doubts about the existence of any God. I do think Religion and the idea of a God or Gods as being very important in any society. I am wondering why? Why do we have to have this non worldly over powering judging force in our lives and be so scared of it. In fairness people **** themselves when they imagine not believing in god or whatever. Is it a case of majority rules ? If you live in a religious society and your parents believe in it so much , and they usually know best right? I think religion is a controlling device and 90% of people fall for it for thier whole lives.
