Why do religions and religious people stifle free thought?

This question comes from a tangent we got onto in another thread.

Take for example the theory of evolution. Many religious people feel that this theory (and please keep in mind, it is a theory because it has not been dulpicated in a controled enviroment) must be banned from school. Yet they feel that prayer to a god that can not be seen tangibly is okay.

Also, take a look at the gravity and our solar system. For a while, the teachings of gravity and a sun centered solar system was banned by the catholic church (I think like in the 1400's or so) because the church felt it was questioning God.

Why do religions do this? Why do the feel the need to be ultimately right and force others to go along?
