Why do we do science?

Why do we do science, what are the driving forces that causes the human being to do it and what defines the worth of a particular area of pursuit?

Are our motivations purely 'profit' motivated in that new knowledge will produce a net gain to society, eg through ancient science initially from a spear to a bow and arrow then to a gun for hunting and conquering others.

Is motivated mostly by the Government/Military eg trigonometry from the Egyptians for purposes of taxes or the atomic bomb and computer? (the technology for both existed well before they came into being)

Is is purely financially profit motivated as per the inventor and medical companies?

Is its pursuit just part of who we are as human beings?
What use is much of the highly abstract maths that some do, a large number of scientific papers in many areas will probably ever be used. Although the argument is used it will be available for use later . This is true to some extent, but by and large I do not buy the argument. Which does mean to say such work it is bad.

I imagine the answer is a complex combination of the above and more. The worth of a piece of science I also imagine is answered by considering why we do science.
