Generalist vs Specialist...

Is it better to be a Generalist or a Specialist in terms of knowledge/skills ?

Generalist would be someone who knows or attempts to understand everything s/he works on, comes across. So this person is likely to have a very
wide range of knowledge, but as all of us have limited brain power and time, s/he is likely to have average knowlege of many many things.

Specialist would be someone who knows or attempts to understand his/her area of work/specialization very well. S/he is not interested in trying to know
or understand everything s/he may come across, but has defined for himself/herself that s/he will be a expert in his chosen field. So s/he has deep undertstanding
and is a expert in his field, but in general lacks a good understanding of other areas.

Question : Which of these individuals is more likely to succeed in life ? What would you want to be.
Question : What is good for Society - having generalists/specialists.

(Let us stick to normal definition of things and not debate them. Eg : "Succes" is success as we know i.e money, power, recognition.)
