Faith and right/left political orientation

According to you, is there is a relation between believing/not believing in god and right/left political orientation?

Do you think that god believers tend to be majorly right wing politically oriented, and atheists are majorly left wing politically oriented?
Do you think there is a cause-to-effect link between faith and political orientation (in one direction or another)? Or do you think it's just incidental correlation?

I know that the concept of left/right political orientation slightly differs between countries, but I'm still interesting in your opinion wherever you come from. This would be the occasion to see how the concept differs between countries.

As a example this is how I see the separation between left and right wing. This definition is of course subject to discussion.
left-wing : social democrats, moderate socialists and communists.
right-wing : conservatists, free-market economy supporters and nationalists.
