Does Freedom Earned work better than Freedom Given?

I was re-watching The Patriot movie starring Mel Gibson, which moves me no matter how many times I watch it.

Basically, it made me realize, that as decadent as we have become, we have lost touch with the true value of our freedom and liberties.

America is not perfect, but i think there are some inherent problems in it's structure.

But all that aside, here is the big question.

Why have we lost touch with the core american values, that created this nation? Family Values, American Dream, Fiscal Responsibility, Commerce, Innovation.

That is because as born American Citizens, at least most of us, have not had to actually fight for our freedom, and because of this we take it for granted, and even assume freedoms' that should not exist, and were not constructed in the Constitution.

I would prefer this conversation be on the philosophical side, rather than the political. Because that is more likely to be civil.
