Islam and Equality?

May God bless all who read or participate in this discussion!

A letter usually accepted by Muslims as being authored by Osama Bin Laden refers to Islam this way:

"...it is the religion of unity and agreement on the obedience to Allah, and total equality between all people, without regarding their colour, sex, or language."

That is an amazing, amazing claim!

Would someone please explain to me how Islam can be viewed this way, as a religion of TOTAL equality (no exceptions!) in principle (from the Quran) and/or practice?

To my admittedly too-western sensibilities, there are many things within Islam, the Quran, Hadith and Sunnah, etc. that are at the least very confusing on this topic. Islam, for all of its virtues, does not appear to me to advocate "total equality between all people," at least not in the way I understand "total" and "equality."
