What is it all for?

What is the goal of religions that believe in the second coming of Christ and/or the apocalypse in general (if there is such an answer)? I assume it is to get you into heaven? Seems self centered to me. Certainly they won't be able to make the world a better place, it's all going to shit right?

In general terms....

A group of people who were lucky enough to be born into an environment where they grew up [insert religion here]. Knowing full well that the world is damned anyway each member does what is necessary to get him/her self into heaven. All the rest are screwed to an afterlife of eternal damnation.

If thats the case, ill take the eternal damnation, I don't want any part of it, its sick.

And for my question, do I have an unusually pessimistic view of religions today?
