Does religion improve people's behaviour? (statistics!)

All major religions tell people not to kill and steal and such.
However all religions have many people that still do kill for such simple things as money, power, religion itself and more.

My curiosity is if there are any somewhat reliable statistics of the number of crimes committed by religous people versus non relgious people in percentages and difference per religion.

Seeing as they all say "don't kill" are there less killers in percentage in religous people versus people that don't believe in anything?
Do these numbers differ accros religions?
Are there maybe numbers for people in jail and their religion versus people not in jail and their religion? Example with made up figures: from people in jail 20% is Christian, from people not in jail, 30% is Christian.
Do these numbers differ for different countries?
Are there "popular" crimes for different religions?

Is there a difference in how bad different (major) religions regard different crimes?
