The morality of torture

I fell into a discussion with a guy who adamantly asserted that torture -- of any kind, for any reason -- is immoral and never justified. He mentioned the well-known "ticking bomb" scenario, which goes something like this:

It is known that there is a nuclear bomb hidden somewhere in New York City.
It is armed and set to explode in one hour. You have captured one of the
persons responsible for placing the bomb. You have indisputable evidence that
he knows where the bomb is hidden and you also know of a 100% certainty
that if you can get him to reveal the location, you can stop the explosion.
But he refuses to tell you where it is. The question:

In such a case -- where 10,000,000 human lives can be saved -- are you
justified in inflicting pain on this man in order to convince him to reveal the
location of the bomb?

My buddy was adamant: Ten Million or Ten Billion lives -- no difference, it would Never EVER be justified. I offered up several increasingly difficult hypothetical situations and eventually, I think I was able to show him that there are at least *some* situations where physically harming a person to elicit information *might* be justified.

In the course of this discussion, I intend to present a series of hypothetical scenarios. I know that many P&R posters are incapable of understanding the concept of a hypothetical question and will try to argue "around" the scenario (e.g., "That could never happen" or "Maybe the bomb won't explode" or whatever.) Please try to avoid the temptation to do that. Thanks!
