I have no ulterior motive behind this question. I simply want to investigate how religious belief systems have affected historic civilisations, and societies. I'm looking at ways religions may have benfitted, or adversly affected such societies. I want to discuss it here as a future reference, because I think there too many extreme views on this, either for or against religion, and I think a balanced view is required. So everybody is welcome to post - but please, think before you post, and try to back up your claims as best you can with references.

Please also, treat each other with respect. I will request that any off topic comments be removed.

In this thread the focus is history up to 1945.
