how do I deal with a combative attitude from my girlfriend?

Hi Everyone;

I have been experiencing chronic combativeness from my girlfriend ever since we have been dating over the past year. Recently, the problem is getting worse with regards to the frequency of this unacceptable behavior. Now, when I say combative, I mean she often takes what I say or do not say, what I do or do not do, and converts these things into a quarrel or argument. I am not sure how to react to this because it always catches me by surprise. But, I always feel angry with hurt feelings which results in my desire to withdraw or avoid her for a period of time. Then, she takes that separation personally by suggesting I do not want her around. So, needless, to say, I am not sure what to do about the combativeness.

From a previously closed post regarding this matter, I reached the conclusion to stop the relationship until we can work through this and many other issues within group counseling. When I say stop the relationship, I do not mean end it. But, that may still be the end result.

In the meantime, how can I best deal with her combative attitude?
