Cruelty

I remember once seeing a wildlife program where killer whales were torturing seals by flipping them up in the air and smashing them around. They weren't eating them. They were just having fun by being cruel to them. It was shown as part of David Attenborough's Living Planet series at the beginning of the 90s and shocked a lot people at the time. That animals could be cruel like that.

Look at this. Unbelievable. The whales are certainly having fun:

I would define that behaviour as cruel. What function does it fulfill? Whay are people and animals cruel?.
