Economic mess (?)

According to what we hear in the media, the U.S. in an "economic mess" that "needs fixin'"
Is this true? If yes:
1) What are the symptoms?
How have you *personally* been affected?
2) Who or what caused it?
3) What can be done to fix the situation?

I imagine a major discussion focus will be in the housing/subprime-lending situation.
For whatever reason, the blame for this problem tends to get placed at the door of the Executive Branch. Is there any basis for that? If you think so, what reasoning do you use to reach that conclusion?

I heard an argument in a different thread that in past years, Congress made laws that forced (or perhaps just enabled) lenders to be more liberal in lending policies in order to better serve underprivileged/distressed populations (poor, inner-city residents, for instance). Is there any validity to that argument? What specific laws were passed?
