I am closing the question in the Lounge with this title and reopening it here for 50 cheeses.

What is the last American palast, who wrote about it and in which book(s)?

The clues so far are :-

1) A German export beer.

2) A posting to Larry Merrell

lmerrell: In this book, by not an insignificant author, he starts off by mentioning the Last American Palast. Ie: it is essentially American, not Indian built in America, but a house, a villa, a castle, a folly perhaps, but it is built like a palace and it has a distinctive, let us say, colonial flavor about it (says he trying desparately not to sound too home-spun). The character then introduced appears in several subsequent books.
