Pete has it for the English dictionary.
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, which has 45 letters and which is a disease of the lungs caused by inhaling very fine irritant particles.

Technical terms
The technical term for "Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Dahlemense Stain" is the current official longest word:

Acetylseryltyrosylserylisoleucylthreonylserylprolylserylglutaminylphenylalanylvalylphenylalanylleucylserylserylvalyltryptophylalanylaspartylprolylisoleucylglutamylleucylleucylasparaginylvalylcysteinylthreonylserylserylleucylglycylasparaginylglutaminylphenylalanylglutaminylthreonylglutaminylglutaminylalanylarginylthreonylthreonylglutaminylvalylglutaminylglutaminylphenylalanylserylglutaminylvalyltryptophyllysylprolylphenylalanylprolylglutaminylserylthreonylvalylarginylphenylalanylprolylglycylaspartylvalyltyrosyllysylvalyltyrosylarginyltyrosylasparaginylalanylvalylleucylaspartylprolylleucylisoleucylthreonylalanylleucylleucylglycylthreonylphenylalanylaspartylthreonylarginylasparaginylarginylisoleucylisoleucylglutamylvalylglutamylasparaginylglutaminylglutaminylserylprolylthreonylthreonylalanylglutamylthreonylleucylaspartylalanylthreonylarginylarginylvalylaspartylaspartylalanylthreonylvalylalanylisoleucylarginylserylalanylasparaginylisoleucylasparaginylleucylvalylasparaginylglutamylleucylvalylarginylglycylthreonylglycylleucyltyrosylasparaginylglutaminylasparaginylthreonylphenylalanylglutamylserylmethionylserylglycylleucylvalyltryptophylthreonylserylalanylprolylalanylserine

Or there is Another word, a scientific name for tryptophan synthetase, which is made up of 267 amino acids, has appeared written down a number of times and has 1,909 letters.

There is some debate as to whether or not a place name is a legitimate word. Without entering that debate, let it be noted that the longest officially recognized place name in an English-speaking country is
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu (85 letters)
which is a hill in New Zealand.

What about "beleaguer" then? That has, between "be" and "r", a league (3.456 miles).
"Sparsely" has 5/6 of a parsec between "s" and "ly".
*L* I think andyalder has it figured out even though ckavitha gave the answer he/she had in mind.  Way to go andy!
tsk, tsk, ckavitha.  Not enough time to let expert answer here! So where does this get closed and points awarded?
i just posted the question to have fun. I felt there would be no more answers and posted the answer for the question.

However I feel all those who had spent time in finding the word in dictionaries and responding to the question, deserve the points. Can we take a consensus among ourselves and the person who with higher vote will get points?

My vote is for andyalder.

bye,
kavitha
My vote is for MusicMan :)
Give it to the to person who got the longest word? seeing as you poseted the real answer, But Musicmans post above is very funny and deserves some points :^)

smiles is the longest word, because there's a mile between the first letter and the last.
Damn, just noticed djsqueeze got there before me with smiles.

The longest word probably in common usage is

electro-encephalographicalistically
I think Bob Everard has it with Beleauger, but when your 8 year old kid tyells you this old childrens joke don't go telling them its beleauger rather than smiles or they'll burst into tears.
floccinaucinihilipilification

It means "the estimation of something as worthless."

btw SMILELESS is longer than SMILE
"SMILELESS" ...  It also makes the face look "LONG"
Here are my sesquipedalian answers....

What is the longest word in English dictionary?
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
antidisestablishmentarianism
pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis - defined by the OED as "a factitious word alleged to mean 'a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust'
Floccinaucinihilipilification
Noun: The habit or custom of judging or pronouncing as worthless or of no value.

What is the longest place name ?
Krungthepmahanakonbowornratanakosinmahintarayudyayamahadiloponoparatanarajthaniburiromudomrajniwesmahasatarnamornpimarnavatarsatitsakattiyavisanukamphrasit - Guinness Book of Records, the name of Bangkok (Krungthep) in Thai

Or

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu - This Maori mouthful translates into English as "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater,' played his flute to his loved one." I consider this a lean short-story, however, and have serious reservations about giving New Zealand the gold, especially without photographic evidence. But you may count it if you like.

OR

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch - Wales

Get it?

What is the longest word in 'English dictionary'?

That's easy.

DICTIONARY
Or solidarity
or sardonistic
or sidelining

or several other anagrams...
You either choose to include science and medicine or not. If you don't there may actually be a longest word. If you do no matter what anyone tells you.. methion.. etc any of those are not the longest words for one reason only and that is that there is a rule in science that states that a polyamine (a substance made of more than one amine) can be named by stringing together each of its amines meaning that you can create words that are infinitely long just by starting with a chain and adding meaningless amines to the end thereby lengthening the name. Im sure you can see where that would pose a problem for finding the one "longest" word.
And what's the longest PRONOUNCEABLE word in the English Dictionary. Wow, that does narrow it down a bit! :)
