Question

How to turn https on? - "Page not displayed" error by trying to login to https secure sites (eg hotmail)

Asked by: b3lz

The origin of this problem lies in not being able to login to my hotmail account. It seems however that i can't acces any https:// site on the web. I checked the SSL and TLS options, i tried to set my safety to 'low' etc.. but i stil can't login to https sites, and i wonder how why... :\ (so if you know pls reply? :p)

( Further on if i use the method below to login to my hotmail account, i get a message that my ActiveX configuration is not able to display everything, but i can actually see every pixel on the screen, whatever this question comes not into ActiveX, but it might be an indication for someone. )

For those reading this that have the same hotmail problem you can go around that by avoiding the https:
go to www.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/start and use full email and your password to login.

If any answer comes out i would be gratefull,

This is most certainly proxy related... you're either not using a proxy for https or you are using one that doesn't support it.

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > (Proxy Frame) Advanced

Reply with more details.

I suppose you could have a virus as well, lol, got to say it before 100 n00bs...

I use the proxy server of my ISP to connect to browse the web, (proxy.pandora.be:8080), i am sure they support https, because on other computers with the same proxy server there are no problems (they are elsewhere, i have only one pc in here that is connected to my isp). So i suppose this is not a proxy related problem.. :<

I am afraid i can't give more details as i don't know what would be appropriate information. I use Internet Explorer 5, i'll try to upgrade to 6 altough i don't really like microsoft upgrades :\ Further on i don't have a firewall running nor a virusscanner, there are only four programs loaded (explorer, loadqm, systray)

it just seems that thereis something on this pc that blocks the https or maybe some settings are fault or some file is corrupt, but i don't really know what https is or does or what it could be :\ one thing i know for sure is that MANY people have this problems as i encountered it many times on the web and i know at least five people (from over the world) that use that above described tricky to login to hotmail.

I wonder why i can't find any solution on the web. If you want some more information i can dig it up for you but at this moment i just dont know what details may be interesting...

please keep on helping me pwz

eh, no i don't have a virus #@!

Hey i have some details, read this:

i upgraded to Internet Explorer 6
i restarted my pc as usual after such an upgrade
pc told me this:

"Windows has encountered problems while entering the system registry, windows will now reboot to solve the problem" OK (i translated it..)

But while that message was on my screen, i browsed to hotmail.com and LOGGED INTO MY ACCOUNT THROUGH HTTPS!

after that windows rebooted with a blue screen:
"Window registry control"

then rebooted again and my start page was changed to some weird old icq start page stuff indicating that old registry entries are restord, point is i cannot go through https anymore and i am back to the old problem,

hope this inspires you,

Have you virus scanned the computer. The fact that your home page changed might mean your expericing some weird  virus related problems.

If you don't have an anti-virus program installed, how are you sure you don't have a virus?

by: b3lzPosted on 2003-01-07 at 23:57:00ID: 7684177

i only disabled it to see if that would help me out, i scanned with the latest .dat file, THIS IS NOT A VIRUS RELATED PROBLEM!

latest detail: i got that "systemregistry"-error some more times when booting my pc, every time the pc reboots and places the old configuration back (old wallpaper, startpage, etc..)

I am now searching google for the problem and trying to boot with all startup features disabled...

by: kasandraPosted on 2003-01-08 at 00:10:06ID: 7684237

No need to get crotchety - the only way we can help is to ask questions to try to narrow down the problem.

by: b3lzPosted on 2003-01-08 at 00:47:30ID: 7684356

heh, whatever, thx for trying to help anyway, i found this...

It seems i have two problems:

1. The orgininal problem:

Due to fault settings somewhere (register, .ini, ...) i cannot go through https any more.

what i tried:
-SSL TLS options
-default things like virusscanning, disabling firewall etc
-cookie configuration: certainly ok
-proxy configuration: certainly ok
-disabled startup functions in "msconfig"
-updating explorer, that worked fine but brought me to the next problem...

possible reason:
<unknown>

2. The second problem:

For some weird reason the pc gives me an error message that can be found here:
http://www.student.kuleuven.ac.be/~m0223495/error/
it says: "Fault while accessing system registry, windows will now reboot to fix the problem" - after that windows reboots and places the old configuration back.

What i tried:

-booting without startup loading of .bat, .ini, etc
-registry scan: registry is ok

possible reason:
some software may not well be uninstalled

So that's how far i got it right now, i consider closing this question and splitting the two putting them in their appropriate section.

I hope this made things some clear, whatever if you have any idea to help me further, you're welcome!

I SOLVED MY OWN PROBLEM

if you are interested...

the ssl was because of corrupt dll files

those dll's where corrupt because of a corrupt uninstall from some graphic tv capture program

when i tried to install iexplore6 some entries were changed and windows always reinstalled corrupt files AND registry, i got the error in scanregw

i changed to an old registry in dos startup mode with scanreg /restore

dan booted, registry problem ok, then weird system dll file error (old dll's over new written) again, those dll's seemed to be from directx stuff, (maybe therefore the activexsetting where corrupt), so i reinstalled directx (v9)

then rebooted and reinstalled microsoft explorer as that was the solve for the ssl problem (also some corrupt dll's in the windows/system folder that needed to be replaced)

now everything is fine

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND CANNOT LOGIN TO HOTMAIL I FOUND THE SOLUTION:

go to help - info in internet explorer, if there is "cipher strength 0b" you just found the problem, for solving that problem follow the steps on:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;261328

now that will solve the problem

hope i help lot of people with this, because i know LOADS of people have the same problem... altough with me it was a "bit" mor complex :/

Greetings,

-b3lz

Hi there - what browser are you using? If IE - please go to help --> about --> then check out your cipher strength - if your cipher strength is lower than 128 bit - then you will not be able to use most https:// URLs. If you do have IE - you have to download the 128 bit encrryption pack from the Microsoft website.

For Netscape....to check :
In the "Communicator" menu , select "Tools" then select "Security Info" -->
Select "Navigator" from the dialog box -->
Enable the checkbox next to "Enable SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) v2"
Click on the "Configure SSL v2" button and the following "Configure Ciphers" screen will be displayed. Please ensure that the checkboxes "RC4 encryption with a 128-bit key" and "RC2 encryption with a 128-bit key" are selected.

This should work for you just fine.

Have a great day!
