The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

What do you mean of another private user? Private user of EE or another group?   If you have your own webiste - when you ask people sign up, etc - you can create a field that way to get people's IP addresses.  If you are trying to get an IP address of another EE member - well I am sure that the IP addresses are logged - but you would more than likely need a court order to have EE release that information to you since a lot of people consider that personal information.

Yea there is noway anyboard will give you that information without good reason. sounds to me like your after someone's IP from messenger or something, are we trying to use trojans by anychance? There are ways of aquiring peoples personal ip addresses, but i cant see any reason someone would really need this information without being malicious,

It isn't a malicious reason for me wanting this information, merely curiosity, I am "trying" to learn about internet security and how/why someone would get a personal IP address.  I know how to find out an IP for a website, also how to find an IP from someone visiting "my" website, I just wondered if it was also possible for someone to find my IP address without me disclosing it to them or visiting a site to which they had access to.

I will say again I have no malicious intent, I would just like to understand how.  It is not a requirement of the course I am doing to have this knowledge, but it touched briefly on the subject of firewalls, proxy servers and other security and now I would like to find out for myself. Thanks.

06.24.2003 at 10:38AM PDT, ID: 8791168
If you send a person an e-mail - yes it is possible to get the IP address that way.

ok ill tell you a way, if the person sends you an email to a hotmail account u can enable the headers (i think thats what they are) and it will show you the persons ip address. BTW ips from dial up addresses change everytime they log on to the internet (they are dynamic)

06.24.2003 at 04:16PM PDT, ID: 8793394
Thanks for that, Bez625.  I did already have an idea that this was the case with E-mail as I have looked at the properties of email in my own inbox and seen that there are IP adresses there, even the name that the user has given to the personal computer, none of this information is in the course that i'm doing but I think it will show that i've been doing my own research if I know!  Is there any way someone could get my IP address from say an instant message or even posting a message on a site.  Or are those much more secure?  I won't ask anymore questions!! Thanks for your help.

06.24.2003 at 04:20PM PDT, ID: 8793409
As far as posting on a website, are the owner?  If so, you will more than likely have access to that.  If you are on a board & a moderator, you might have access to that IP address.  A lot of guestbooks also keep the IP address also to reduce spamming.

Corey

06.24.2003 at 04:21PM PDT, ID: 8793411
posting on a site is fairly secure, only admin have access to them IP's (some mods may too depending on the site), messenger people can only access IP's if there is a direct link between conversations, ie a file being transfered, maybe if there is a voice conference or something like that too im not sure, but apart from that messenger i think is pretty much secure.

I doubt this will help your course in any way at all, at the end of the day if they dont teach it you you wont be asked it in an exam

Accepted Solution

06.24.2003 at 05:33PM PDT, ID: 8793696
to get an IP for a website just go start->run, type in command if before windows xp and cmd if after, take the address without all the directories and file names (like http://www.experts-exchange.com/Miscellaneous/URLs/Q_20657198.html would just be www.experts-exchange.com) and type in "ping address" like in my example i would do "ping www.experts-exchange.com" and it will tell you the IP.

for your website, you can do this:

<script language="JavaScript">
var ip = '<!--#echo var="REMOTE_ADDR"-->';
do whatever you want to do with the ip adress here
</script>

problem is that this includes server side include so you need that enabled

here is another solution, this time requiring php:

<?
function get_client_ip ()
{
    // Get REMOTE_ADDR as the Client IP.
    $client_ip = ( !empty($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']) ) ? $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] : ( ( !empty($_ENV['REMOTE_ADDR']) ) ? $_ENV['REMOTE_ADDR'] : $REMOTE_ADDR );

    // Check for headers used by proxy servers to send the Client IP. We should look for HTTP_CLIENT_IP before HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR.
    if ($_SERVER["HTTP_CLIENT_IP"])
        $proxy_ip = $_SERVER["HTTP_CLIENT_IP"];
    elseif ($_SERVER["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"])
        $proxy_ip = $_SERVER["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"];

    // Proxy is used, see if the specified Client IP is valid. Sometimes it's 10.x.x.x or 127.x.x.x... Just making sure.
    if ($proxy_ip)
    {
        if ( preg_match("/^([0-9]+.[0-9]+.[0-9]+.[0-9]+)/", $proxy_ip, $ip_list) )
        {
            $private_ip = array('/^0./', '/^127.0.0.1/', '/^192.168..*/', '/^172.16..*/', '/^10..*/', '/^224..*/', '/^240..*/');
            $client_ip = preg_replace($private_ip, $client_ip, $ip_list[1]);
        }
    }

    // Return the Client IP.
    return $client_ip;
}
?>

i need to know what software you have available, ssi, php, asp, etc?

Thanks again Bez625,  You are absolutely right I wouldn't be tested on that in particular but it is something that I had wondered about since studying the Security side of the internet in very brief detail!!  I do like to know as much as my small brain can take onboard!!!  I had already covered the use of commands like ping, tracert and ipconfig but I was just curious as to whether these commands could actually be used against another private user.  Thanks again you are welcome to the points.......cheers

hi there i am wondering how you access the ip address through hotmail? i am quite young and dont know much about computers!! i am wanting the ip address to mess about with a friend and will not use it for malicious intent! it will be used as part of a program which my friend owns as well as i do and knows i am tryin to do it!!
thanks!

01.05.2004 at 04:25PM PST, ID: 10048560
If it is to mess about with a friend, then your friend will be able to tell you his IP address by visiting a "Whats my IP" website or by using his Internet access software depending on what it is. I don't know about accessing the IP address from a HOTMAIL account as I don't use it, but using Outlook you can right click a message and select properties-Details the IP Address of the sender is included there.

Cheers

hi i know he could tell me his because he knows wat im gonna do n that! is there any other way i could find out his ip address without asking him or using outlook express??

02.04.2004 at 07:50PM PST, ID: 10277624
The best way to find out an ip address is Social Engineering :) and messengers can tell a persons ip address with a modification, and them adding you to thier contacts or vise versa like for example ICQ. i once had this messenger and added a mod to it that i could tell anyones ips address that was in my contact list as long as they were online and signed in. Or with linux they have lost of utilities for finding people or machines in general that are online not so much a certain person, ie ping sweeps, and pinging the broadcast addy.

If I am being harrassed by a person on AIM , is there a way to find the IP of that one person or only the AIM site connection?

03.16.2004 at 10:32PM PST, ID: 10612887
catdeb...

I dont think you can find out ip's from AIM... I think everything goes through the AIM servers so the only ip you'd get is the AOL server's.

03.16.2004 at 10:34PM PST, ID: 10612896
On the other hand if AIM works Peer to Peer .. you can type "netstat -na" from the command prompt and get a list of connected IP's

03.29.2004 at 10:56AM PST, ID: 10706683
I heard that forums moderators block users/abusers by blocking their ip address but if they are on a dial up connection then their ip will change. So how does the ban still work?? bit off topic i know...sry but i'm very interested to know.

03.29.2004 at 12:03PM PST, ID: 10707379
I think the answer to that is that they cannot uphold a ban if the IP address changes, sometimes the user names are also listed as banned but obviously these can be changed also.

06.18.2004 at 06:19PM PDT, ID: 11349355
The easiest way to do it would be just through an IRC client ( mirc). If you can lure them to IRC.. that is..

01.10.2005 at 06:14AM PST, ID: 13002863
When a user receives an IP address thru dial-up, it usually stays with him/her for sometime. Until he/she requests to change it by force. So a forum moderator can safely (on most cases) rely on blocking the IP addresses

02.19.2005 at 07:36AM PST, ID: 13353754
For those of you wondering why anyone would want to do this, there are many reasons.  I connect to my computer remotely.  But I only allow certain IP's to pass through my router.  This is the highest security (rather than say using the program's filter) because it keeps me stealth to the rest of the world.

Let's say I'm going to visit someone and I want to be able to access my computer from their house.  Well I need their IP so I can add it to the safe list.  It is often much easier to figure these things out on your own (if possible) than to ask them (especially if they don't know what they're doing).  Or perhaps you want to monitor them for a few days to see if they have a dynamic IP or static IP.

Of course there are more than one malicious reason to pull IPs, but there are many legitimate reasons as well.

07.25.2005 at 01:42PM PDT, ID: 14521686
Just to clear something up you can run the command promt through typing either Command or cmd in the RUN window on XP allthought they start on different file paths. I'm basing this on what happens on my PC which runs on Home Edition.
Sorry if this is kind of off topic.
