Visual Studio Express Edition.

Tags: express, edition, mfc, studio, visual
So I have just started a new job and I asked for a copy of "Visual C++" to be installed on my machine.  The IT department says that Microsoft have stopped shipping Visual C++ on its own, and now only have an "Express Edition".  The FAQ for the express edition says:

"Express Edition products are designed for hobbyists, students, and novice developers. As such, they lack the full breadth of features found in higher-end Visual Studio and SQL Server Editions"

and I don't want a cut down version.  I also don't need Visual Basic, Visual C#, etc.  I only use Visual C++.  In fact I could make do with a copy of Version 6, but the new ide has some nice stuff that I like.  I know that you used to be able to get VC++ .NET that had everything except it wasn't an optimizing compiler – which was easily fixed by downloading the platform sdk.

So my question is... what is the major difference between the Express Edition for developing applications that do not use the windows gui heavily - no MFC, no .NET - just plain old c++.  Like does it have the same debugging and object browsing?  Or is there any way to get the full Visual C++ IDE and optimizing compiler without buying the full suite, or has Microsoft fully closed that door now (crippling the compiler wasn’t enough).

Thanks!

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.
