The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Tags: Microsoft, Visual Studio 6.0
Hi, we have an client -server VC++ application, quite old, still working on Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 ver.
currently there is a plan to move the project to higher version to Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005 .

1. Did anyone have already similar kind of projects?
2. If yes, how about the difficulty level for the migration?
3. Any particular stuffs which is NOT supported in higher version?

Thanks

If you are talking of just compiling under VS 2005 then it ought to go quite smoothly.  VS 2005 is *more compliant* with standards so you may have to make some small changes.  There are some functions that can replace older ones (though those still work) with a view to stopping buffer overruns and the potential security problems.

HOWEVER if you are talking of converting C/C++ to .NET then you will have a lot of coding to do.

I agree that managed VC++.NET is significantly more involved than unmanaged MFC/ATL VC++.NET.

yeah. I am just worried on the compilation part. I was wondering since namespaces are used commonly in .NET version, may be some header file need to be included/excluded which are currently being used in old version.

Is there any complied list of do's and don'ts or Do I need to do the research on the MSDN ?

Thanks

namespaces in .NET code yes.
But are you converting to .NET or just compiling C/C++ code in VS 2005 ?

(crudely said C++ .NET is NOT the same as C++)

I am not sure if I am putting it right.sorry for the inconvenience.

Migrating to higher version of the current VC++/MFC 6.0 project would mean using the Microsoft Studio C++ .NET 2005 or Microsoft Studio C++ 2005 ?I would like to have the best possible environment, if Microsoft Studio C++ .NET 2005 is better?

Thanks

Roop,

What is "best" for me, may not be "best" for you?  I work with managed projects, so that is the direction that I would go in.  But, as we said before, that would require a fair amount of code rewrites to accomodate.

2005 has both .NET and classic C/C++ in it.  What you code in is up to you.

Bob, Andy

Then the right direction would be going for .NET.
That would means code to be re written and obviously would take lots of effort.

Is there any material available for reference like common errors/issue faced while migration?

Thanks
Roop
