How to ensure safe 'critical section' for variable in multithreaded Form application?

I have a VS 2005 .Net Form Application and probably a simple question on thead safe access of one project variable.

The Form has six group boxes. I also have one thread [ MainPanelThreadProc() ] which polls all the group boxes for data. Hence the thread looks something like this:

Group1SocketFlag is generally equal to '1', hence EvaluateData() is always being checked. The first thing it checks is a variable (EvaluationMode) which is set BY THE USER. Thus, my concern is that the user will eventually set 'EvaluationMode' at the precise moment EvaluateData() is checking the value.

What is the safest approach here? Would it be enough that 'EvaluationMode' is declared private within Form.h? Do I need some sort of Invoke, mutex .... ?
