The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Why don't post-build events work for a simple file copy similar to below?

Tags: VS 2005 Post-Build Events
I am trying to use the worse IDE in the world (I can't wait for SP1 to VS 2008--VS 2005 is simply unuseable).

Sorry, had to get that out.  I am trying to copy some files from one folder to another after a successful build.

The exact build event I place in the post-build dialog is as follows:

copy /y $(OutDir)*.* "C:\projects\LCS Web Development\lib\"

However, when I do a successful build, I get a 'returned with code=1' error.  This works on the command line just fine, but it doesn't work (in fact it appears that NOTHING WORKS ON THE POST-BUILD EVENT!).

I've searched other Build Event issues here and it appears that this happens to a LOT of people.  Is this a known M$ bug?  If so is there a work-around?

Or am I doing something completely stupid with the above?  (Just as an FYI, I don't actually hard code the desitination folder--though the above line doesn't work either).

I need an expert!

$(OutDir) doesn't have a trailing \
try $(OutDir)\*.* instead

ps. I can't remember what the /y with the copy does, maybe you need to remove that

First, complaining about the dev IDE is akin to the carpenter blaming his hammer.

The $(OutDir) macro expands to include the trailing \, so that isn't the problem.

If you look at the error message that's being generated in the Output window, it would have given you the hint you needed.

The command "copy bin\Debug\*.* C:\temp" exited with code 1.

copy bin\Debug\*.* is a relative path. In VS2003 the PostBuild event executed from the context of the output folder, so in effect you're trying to copy bin\Debug\bin\Debug\*.*.

You should use $(TargetDir) instead of $(OutDir). The $(TargetDir) macro expands to the fully qualified location of the build output folder.

Not according to my IDE, for example for a debug build it is .\debug

Hah.  Well, this 'carpenter' is tired of M$ selling stuff that doesn't work.  Seems the only ones who do not complain about Microsoft are those who work there.  I could post mountains of dissatisfied folks and tons of unfixed bugs in VS 2005.

But I do appreciate your answer.  Is there documentation that actually explains what you so eloquently stated somewhere for MSBuild?  I couldn't find anything that explained the diff between Target and Output...

Also, in my IDE, Output *does* contain the /, so that wasn't the problem.  Appreciate the response though Andy!

Also, your solution didn't quite work.  I'd read elsewhere that one needs to include quotes in paths when using build events.

So what does work is the following:

copy /y "$(TargetDir)" "C:\projects\LCS Web Development\lib\"

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Quotes - not needed, my postbuild copy functions perfectly without them.

Or rather - if there are spaces in the path then you would require quotes.

I answered my own question. Looks like not many folks here are MSBuild experts.  I guess I'm the MSBuild expert.:)
