The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Visual Studio 2008 - cannot debug referenced assemblies

Tags: Visual Studio 2008, reference, step-thru, step thru
I have a simple web application that calls a method in a business logic dll. The code works fine and I see the dll in the Solution Explorer window.

The problem comes when I set a breakpoint in my web app. I can step thru the web code fine but when it comes to the part where I reference the method in my busines logic dll it just highlights the line as normal and then instead of going through the code in that dll it jumps to the next line in my web code. I cannot debug the dll within my web app.

I used to be able to do this with Visual Studio 2005 Professional but I am using Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite 90 day trial and it does not work.

Any ideas? Am I missing something here? Maybe it's the Team Suite version... I used to use 2005 Professional version.
The code I have attached is a simple version of what I mean. at line 3 or 4 I would expect the next "F10" to jump to the code in the referenced dll but it doesn't. It just carries on.
The business logic is just a simple example where it multiplies the value by 2 and returns it.

Do you have a dll reference or project level reference to the BusinessLogic component from the web application? If you have dll reference, you might not be able to debug inside the code. Please change the reference as the project level reference.

Are you sure that you have Attached the worker process to the VS2008 debugger.
It's something like this, WebDev.WebServer.EXE - ASP.NET Development Server - Port xxxx.

Hi mickdoc;

I can think of two reasons why it is not stepping into the dll code.
1. Keyboard mapping: My default keyboard mapping for C# sets up F10 to step over and F11 to step into.
Check your default on the main menu Debug.
2. The DLL was compiled in release mode and therefore does not have debug info and can not be stepped into.

sachintana:

I never even thought of trying that. It is a dll level reference (which worked in 2005) but I will give the project reference a shot tonight.

FernandoSoto:

You are right, it's step over but it shouldn't matter. As for release mode: It's debug mode (I think... I will double check)

To you statement, "You are right, it's step over but it shouldn't matter.",  If you have been pressing F10 to step into the dll code in debug, it will not step into the dll code. The F10, step over, means to not enter the code in the dll just execute all of its code at one time and pick up at the next line in the current method. So it does matter.

If you are sure about that you have a dll of the debug mode(not the release mode), you also must need .pdb file since to debugger to go inside the code (Step through-F11 should press).

Doh!!!

Fernando, you are a genius. I was being a dumbass. As soon as I press F11 it works as intended.

Thanks for all your help.
