The application cannot start

I was messing around with some thing on my PC and now have an "The application cannot start" error message when opening the Visual Studio 2008 and 2005 ide on Vista, but only when I use the "Run as administrator" option.  I saw some suggestions on the microsoft website, but I still cannot get it working.  I also tried reinstalling VS but no joy. Can any one suggest what I can do to specifically isolate the problem and then fix it.
