Create a JLabel with an Icon which will be your animated GIF.

JFrame f = new JFrame("Animation");

JLabel label = new JLabel(new ImageIcon(new URL("url/to/your/icon.gif")));

f.getContentPane().add(label);
f.pack();
f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
f.setVisible(true);

And if you want to load the GIF from your JAR, use getResource().

new ImageIcon(getClass().getResource("/com/expertsexchange/res/mygif.gif"))

I was hoping I'd be able to place the gif at any x,y
but that doesnt seem to be the case.

I attached my space invaders startoff basics code. Can any of you suggest how to make the Mutalisk at

http://htomc.dns2go.com/anim/anim/mutalisk.gif

appear anywhere x,y on the space area (dont worry about its white background?)
I do all my game object drawing in the paint method.
Mouse moves the ship and space fires

It's probably better to make static images from your animated GIF and then show them in turn. You will have more control over the animation and you can use more colors for the images (using PNG, not GIF). You have two options:

  • Make several files named e.g. mutalisk_1.png, mutalisk_2.png, mutalisk_3.png etc., one for each frame. (I believe they will be four for this particular animation.)
  • Make only one file for the animation. This will be a long strip of single frames similar to a filmstrip. The first frame will be on [0;0], the second one on [60;0] etc. If your mutalisk has multiple states, you can for example add a second row.

There are 5 mutalisk frames. I have separated them in Macromedia Flash and changed the background from white to black.

My major issue is placing a bitmap at a specific x,y in the paint() method in my JFrame.
How do I load a bitmap. How do I position it - for the paint method.

HELP !

//You load an image using AWT toolkit:
java.awt.Toolkit tk = java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
Image img = tk.createImage(url);
//Now your image is represented by the Image object but it is probably still being loaded into the memory. You have to wait for this loading to complete:
MediaTracker tracker = new MediaTracker(component); //you pass the component the image will be drawn on to the media tracker
tracker.addImage(img, 0); //the second parameter is an integer that will be used to identify the image

tracker.waitForAll(); //wait for the images to load (probably on another thread)

//Now the painting:
public void paint(Graphics g){
   g.drawImage(img, x, y, null);
}

You can also use javax.imageio.ImageIO for loading the image:

BufferedImage img = ImageIO.read(url); //This method returns when the image is fully loaded so you can use it for drawing

Amazing. Thanks.
All of Spule's suggestions are the key to this. As soon as I said to make it work in the paint( method, spule got it right.

by: xannusPosted on 2009-08-23 at 17:56:59ID: 31619246

load the Images in your constructor
and draw them as stated in the paint() method
and it's all done.
Thanks Spule.
