Build C++ program at background for cross plaform os

Hi,
Do anyone have any idea of programming a c++ program that is running at background for windows and mac os? Actually i am doing a program on auto media encrytor.. so basically when i plug in a thumbdrive the program will auto run at the background. Then when i drag a file into the thumbdrive, it will automatically encrypt... so how do i do it? i need some reference codes,guides or personal experience from any of the experts for help.
