Also check ctrl-v <backspace> to make sure your getting your keypresses correctly.

I know this question has been asked, but I just cannot get the backspace to work in vi under unix. backspace works fine under my xterm command line, but inside vi, backspace simply moves the cursor to the left with no more effect. This is the same under command or edit mode of vi.
