The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How do I input records from a SQL query into Word Table?

Tags: Microsaoft, Office, Visual Studio 2008, C#, .Net, XML
Hi experts;
Can someone please please please help me?

I think I have a simple request but I really cannot do it.  I have a simple SQL query that brings back a set of results that will contain different amount of rows depending on the query.

Now for the hard part...
I want to display these results in a word table!

As mentioned, the amount of rows (records) brought back will differ so I need to make the table dynamic so that for each record a new row is added to the table.  The reason I would like to use a table is so that I can format the cells etc.  I understand you can create datatables in and then write them in the document but I've never done that and apparently you are limited as to what you can and cannot do with them.

Any help would be very very much appreciated.  If I could award a 1000 points for this I would as ti si really important and driving me crazy.

I have access to VS2008 and although a newbie I would prefer to use C# rather than VB, if indeed I need to use a development tool at all.  I'm hoping I can do this very easily!

Thanks in advance

so, you do already have the code to run the query to have a datareader.
do you also have the code in c# to open/create a word document, and do some "stuff" with the document?
finally, did you already play around with the office macro recorder to so how VBA code would look like when doing stuff? that will be a good help later to find the proper objects and methods of the word document and range objects to do the "stuff" later from c#

Hi, thanks for your reply;
I have created a word project in VS2008, added XML Schema and can get the data into document using the XML tags.

Getting the data into the document is not the problem.  I can put the data where I need it using the XML Schema.

My problem is creating a dynamic table so that when I have added the tags (one tag for each data column entered into each cell within a row), it will then sequentially add rows to the word table as it needs to with regards to how many records are returned.

Thanks again
MM

Have you tried mail merge?  This should accomplish the task.

You simply create a word document with the table formated and then insert the data using the mailmerge function.

Here's more info on Mail Merge:

Many thanks Peppermint;
I'll have a look now and see if it will help.

I would however like to do this without a mail merge.  The reason is that I have created a Smart Document that when after selecting a company from within the Document Action Pane and clicking on insert (a custom button) it then populates the document with information from our database.  However some of the info needs to be in a table and has multiple rows.

The main reason for doing it this way is that the document can then be used as a template throughout the company without any modification.

I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be anyone who knows how to do it and I haven't found out anything through painstaking research.

I have come across documents that have this functionality and they are used within MS Accounting Pro.  Having looked at the SDK for this application I have found the relevant lines in C# that enable rows to be added to a table but the code references Small Business dll's which then seem to explicitly reference the Small Business data instance.  The code I found was:

 // Create line item 1.
IItemLine line =
invoice.CreateSalesInvoiceLine(DocumentLineType.ContractItemLineType) as
IItemLine;
line.LineItem = SBI.ItemAccounts.GetByPrimaryKey(51) as
IItemAccount;
line.Quantity = 3;

// Create line item 2.
line =
invoice.CreateSalesInvoiceLine(DocumentLineType.ContractItemLineType) as
IItemLine;
line.LineItem = SBI.ItemAccounts.GetByPrimaryKey(85) as
IItemAccount;
line.Quantity = 1;

As far as I can see the code above would enable one to create an invoice with however many items your invoice had, whether it was one, two or ten.  I maybe wrong as I am a newbie to this.

Anyhow, if any C# Super Gurus have a way in which I can do this I'd be massively grateful.
Thanks
MM

Hi Peppermint;
I've reviewed the mail merge function and although I can input my records into a table and using the <<Next Record>> it will move onto the next record, it will only do that if there is a row in the table after the next record.

My issue is that I do not want to have to manually add rows to a table so that I can view all of the records or on the other hand have to remove rows in the table if the amount of records is less than the amount of rows.

Thanks for the answer and help.

I see.

Let me understand, do you want to create a document like an invoice or sales history?  So, you have the customer information on top and then all the transactions or sales listed below in a table?  Is that right?  Sometimes the customer may have multiple transactions so the document will be several pages longs.

You also want to create this document several customers?

Hi;
yes that is what I want to do. Do you have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Can you upload some sample data or field names?  Is all the data stored in one table or two such as customers & orders linked by a primary id.  If so, You can do this in MS Access.  This entails, importing the data into Access, creating a report template and finally selecting the criteria to generate the report.

MS Access Northwind db may be a good starting place.  I also included some links to other sample database.

I don't think using another program is the answer, this would be a workaround and not a solution.
I need to know how to do this using the scenario above.

Thanks
