The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Powerbuilder: R0002 error,  Null object reference at line ...event of ...
Tags: powerbuilder, object, null, error, reference
I am getting the following error message in PB 9.0
It does not occur consistently, so it's difficult for me to debug and find out why it's happening.

Powerbuilder Application Execution Error (R0002)
Application Terminated.
Error: Null object reference at line 79 in ue_line_changed event of object w_test_os

And this is the following code where the error is pointing to :
m_owner_supply.mf_change_details(ll_inst,ls_line)

Where m_owner_supply is a menu object and mf_change_details is a menu function which only queries one table and does a count(*) to change an icon on the toolbar.

I thought it had something to do with the menu object, so i tried the following :
IF ISVALID ( m_owner_supply) = TRUE THEN
m_owner_supply.mf_change_details(ll_inst,ls_line)
END IF

but that did not resolve the issue. it occured randomly again by a user.

Any help on WHY this is occuring and WHAT i can do to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.
If you've seen similar problems in other programming languages , please let me know what the resolution was or why it occured in those apps. thanks.

m_owner_supply is the menu itself or a variable of type menu?. This error occurs when the object you are referring is not available in memory. It may be possible that m_owner_supply is attached to some window and that window is not opened when you are calling this function.

Regards,
Sandeep

m_owner_supply is the menu itself .
the error occurs randomly. so i can't debug  it.

how is it that the object you are referring is not available in memory ??
the window associated to this menu is indeed open . and i do see the icons for the menu.

ok...it is sure that object is not in memory.

Is this menu attached to w_test_os?
From where you are calling ue_line_changed event?
Is ue_line_changed event called using POST?

Also try to install latest build of pb9 and once regenerate all your pbls and optimize it.

Regards,
Sandeep

the window calling the ue_line_changed event is w_ship_os.
The menu, m_owner_supply is attached the window via the MenuName in properties-general tab.
and this window is indeed calling the event using Post Event ue_line_changed()

I am currently running this app. on Powebuilder 9.0 BUild 5507

call event without POST

i don't think that will do anything. i actually found a site that explained the solution to this and was able to resolve this on my own.

http://groups.google.com/group/powersoft.public.powerbuilder.general/browse_thread/thread/e51ccc20511b242a/97b69a1d82a44faa?lnk=st&q=null+object+reference+menu+powerbuilder&rnum=1#97b69a1d82a44faa

it basically states to create an instance of the menu and set that new variable = to this.menuid . that should resolve issue.

in other words, the fix -

m_owner_supply myMenu
myMenu = this.menuid   // in Open event of window
myMenu .m_file.m_delete.visible = FALSE  // change all reference to m_owner_supply to now say  myMenu

thanks anyway.

Awesome !!!!

Earlier I tried with
myMenu = m_owner_supply

and that time I thought that this is assignment by reference. So if m_owner_supply is not in memory then what is fun in declaring a variable and assigning same menu to that variable !!!!!!!!!!

But the explanation given in link has cleared doubt and learned something new today !!!
