The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

If i wanted to turn my application into OOP design hows the best way to do it

Tags: c#, IE7
I have a simple app that returns all the installed products followed by there version number with an option to save it. All is displayed in a treeview. Im new to this and want to exploit the class oop that C#.net offers and make step into using classes. I thought a good place to learn this would be to modify my application by using a base class then inheriting 3 class's to handle the treeview lists (bring back Installed product, Version, location). Or can you guys think of a good way learing class's using this app? Hope i expalined myself well! i have included code for my simple c# app

Hi Wilko,

For the problem statement you gave the best OOPS solution is
1) Make a class for products. In this class define properties like version number or any other information of that product that you want to display.
2) Make a second class that will be a collection class which will implement a collection like hastable of arraylist to store the multiple products (object of class you made in 1 step)
3) In your code fetch the details of products one by one & fill the products class. After fetching one object add that object in the collection class.
4) while displaying this information you can traverse that collection object for every product.
5) save any chnages made to any product in that collection object.
6) after editing update back the database.

you can write one more class that will perform the GET & SAVE function for you.

I hope this will clear the basic fundamentals of OOPS.

Actually the above program is OOP already. The only thing that has a slight touch of a procedural behavior is the foreach loop when handling the 'Load' button. So, you could make a class InstalledApp and a (singleton) class 'InstalledApps' where the first handles a single entry in the registry while the second is the container for handling all apps. Then the calls for the Registry 'Uninstall' key and the calls for Registry string entries can be moved to some appropriate class member functions (the suggestion anuragal made was pretty much the same though I don't think you have to add editing features as I don't see a requirement for it).

If adding these classes your prog would be bigger and less straight-forward but has the advantage that it could more easily get enhanced, e. g. by the editing features anuragal suggested. I personally wouldn't do it as the changes make some efforts and hardly bring advantages beside of the training aspect. But for the latter a new project maybe the better way.

Regards, Alex

What you have is very straight class which does everything for you. I would suggest you to split the logic into different layers like Presentation (Front End), Business Process (Logic to acquire installed programs), Data Access (Logic to save or retrieve information).

Advantages will be

1. Presentation is independent of Business Logic. This way you can change the presentation (GUI) without bothering about the side effects on business logic. Say shifting from Windows based to Web based application.
2. Data Access layer gives you flexibility how you want to save the data. This may be to a flat file or an XML representation. Trying defining an interface so you can provide plugable logic to help the user to implement his own logic for storage, say database.
3. Loose coupling - any change in one of the layer has least impact on other logic.
